Not sure if this is worthy of it's own thread, but James Weber from Hartford, WI, has opted to forgo his remaining 3 years at UW-Green Bay and sign with Gullringens GoIF in the Swedish 3rd division http://www.wisconsinsoccercentral.com/set-pieces/professional/3902-weber-signs-pro-deal-in-sweden
This guy was already in Sweden, at FC Andrea Doria, but it looks like this is a professional contract. Here's that club's announcement of the move (which is also confirmed on the Gullringens site): http://www.andreadoria.se/?page=4&article=874
If they are paying anything, it's presumably more than he was getting paid to play in the Horizon League. And if he's above this level, history has shown players in Sweden can move up quickly. (In fact, that already seems to have happened in Weber's case.)
Made his debut today and scored. The game ended 1-1. Google translated the report from the teams website. They refer to the players by their first name and as an FYI James is the only James in the squad http://www.gullringensgoif.se/index.html
He's played in 3 games and scored in all 3 of them. Gullringens have picked up 2 wins and a draw which has helped in their fight against relegation. They are currently in 9th place out of 12 teams. Weber's 3 goals makes him the club's second leading goal scorer, the top goal scorer has 5 goals. http://svenskfotboll.se/cuper-och-serier/information/?scr=table&ftid=35316
Success for James Weber as he has played a huge part in keeping Gullringen from getting relegated. In yesterdays final game of the season the team won 2-0 with Weber as one of the goalscorers which lifted them above the relegation playoff zone. Just like in the "Three americans at Färila IF: Andrew Stadler, Nermin Crnkic and James Weber"-thread he has showed again that he has no problem scoring in the swedish lower divisions, this time with nine goals in ten games. Many of which were deciding goals in helping the team come away with a point from the game.
The local paper wrote yesterday that Weber will return to play with Gullringen again this season. He will arrive in early April since it appears that he is currently playing in the american professional futsal league. The club comment that they have high expectations since he was so successful last year and that it will be exciting to see how many goals Weber can score over a longer period of time.
Weber is continuing his scoring ways in the swedish lower divisions this year. Five goals in five games so far. Apparantly scouts from Allsvenskan club Åtvidabergs FF was on location at a recent game. Weber comments that he hopes to be able to trial with them during the summer.
Weber is trialing with third tier club Sandvikens IF. It's the same club that fellow american Andrew Stadler play for. Stadler and Weber played together in sixth tier Färila IF when they first arrived in Sweden in 2011. Also worth noticing in the news article today is that Sandviken will be bringing in two more american trialists next week, but no names are mentioned.
After being turned down by third tier Sandviken and fourth tier club Vimmerby the local newspaper writes that Weber doesn't want to return to Gullringen and is instead likely to stay home in the US.
Pretty sure one of the American trialists was another Wisconsin guy, BJ Gottschlich. Played at UW-Platteville. He is now back in the U.S. so I am guessing they didn't sign him. His club in Milwaukee has this item on its website: "We’re proud to announce that our very own BJ Gottschlich has been invited to try-out for the Swedish Professional Club, Sandvikens IF. BJ left last Friday, July 5th, 2013, for a chance of a lifetime. BJ started with the Milwaukee Sport Club at U7 and has played his entire club career with the Milwaukee Sport Club. Through his hard work and the coaching and guidance of the Milwaukee Sport Club BJ has grown into the leading scorer on our Men’s Major Team. BJ was also a 4-year starter and 1st Team All-State selection at Germantown High School. BJ continued his soccer career at UW-Platteville. At UW-Platteville BJ was a 4-year starter and earned 2 Conference Player of the Year honors and was selected to be a member of the WIAC’s 100th Anniversary team. We congratulate and wish BJ all the success as he follows his dreams."
According to the official website it seems like Weber made a short return to Gullringen just now towards the end of the season to help out the club from getting relegated, and they did end up avoiding relegation.
He had 10 goals in 2013- http://svenskfotboll.se/cuper-och-serier/spelprogramresultat/?scr=scorers&ftid=39675 But, they seem to have replaced him (Google Translate - 4/11)- "American James Weber has been a reliable scorer in Gullringen the last two seasons. Now it is thought that Jonathan Carlson to fill his role." http://www.vasterviksposten.se/article/articleview/57992/1/57/ At some point he was with PASL indoor club Milwaukee Wave: https://twitter.com/TheJamesWeber But he's not on the roster at their website now.
Weber went back to Gullringens late last season and suffered a knee injury. When he came back to the States, it was determined it was a torn ACL. He had surgery in October ... not sure when he is looking at returning.
Talk about trying to grind your way through professional soccer. Jeez. Best of luck to him in getting some momentum going here.
Good for him for sticking it out through that and good for them taking him back after that injury and all that time off.
Scored 4 goals in the clubs most recent game on the 16th http://www.smalandsfotbollen.se/match/?scr=result&fmid=2678489
@bungadiri @Friedel'sAccent @dark knight A thread for YA Academy, right? Since it's the 3rd division?
