Snip: Montes went to England in October for a tryout with Manchester United and in February spent one week in Germany training with the Borussia Dortmund Football Club. He has his sights set on a professional career, however college soccer and a stint with the U.S. men's U19 national team are also on the horizon. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...fl-smpoy-pbcbs-acw16-0309-20160322-story.html Graduates from HS next year and is a '98.
Apparently now with the Timbers: Benjamin, coming off a 2-1 overtime loss in the regional final to eventual state champion Ransom Everglades, will find out whether there is life after Jacob Montes, the Sun Sentinel Player of the Year who is now playing for the Portland Timbers Academy program and on the verge of making the U.S.'s U-19 national team. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...-soccer-preview-palm-1110-20161108-story.html
Leaving Georgetown: Getting word Georgetown attacker Jacob Montes planning to leave the unbeaten Hoyas after this coming Saturday’s match vs UConn to pursue pro opportunity. He is from Portland Timbers academy and has drawn interest from clubs abroad. #hoyas #mls— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) March 28, 2021
Just spoke with senior attacker Jacob Montes @jacobm1098, who says he will leave for England this weekend for a trial with a Premier League club. He declined to identify the club, which he said has been tracking him for months. #hoyas #rctid #mls— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) March 30, 2021
Can’t say I watched a lot of this player. Getting prem trials is surprising. Anyone have any thoughts on him?
I get your point, but these days, it doesn't seem so crazy that a guy with a profile like this (top college player, MLS academy, some YNT involvement, free agent, young) could get a trial more or less anywhere. Where he lands, of course, could be another question. Often you see guys getting a trial somewhere near the top of the food chain, so to speak, and moving down the line. Guessing that, apart from the apparent connection to Nicaragua, he might have a European passport, or access to one, given his surname. But that's just a guess. And I suppose it doesn't matter much in England now.
True, but a UK (or Irish) one is pretty much the requirement for him to sign in England. I expect we are going to see a bit of a reduction in non-British Isles based players going on trial in the UK.
What the story with him staying all four years in a college after being able to get tryouts with MU and BVB?
We never heard about offers from either club, or any club for that matter. Doesn't mean there weren't any, but if there were, I suppose they weren't as attractive to him as a Georgetown education.
kind of amazing this guy has tryouts still in europe and the timbers dont think he is good enough to sign without basically trialing?
Signs with Crystal Palace: ✅ Crystal Palace F.C. has reached an agreement to sign 22-year-old Jacob Montes on a one-year term, subject to international clearance.#CPFC pic.twitter.com/xbhVoUtF26— Palace Report (@PalaceReport) May 25, 2021 https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/2021/may/midfielder-jacob-montes-to-join-crystal-palace/
I'm looking at some of the comments of the soccer Twitterati and they are speculating he doesn't have access to UK/Irish WP, so he'll go on loan as he won't even be able to play U23s. But a one-year deal doesn't make much sense for that set of circumstances.
palace sees enough here to take a punt in what is surely an impossible signing where he will need loaned to like the eredivisie and portland says nah. what is going on there?
Some eval: Montes is extremely creative in the midfield. Free kick specialist. Captained the team that beat Daryl Dike in the NCAA championship. Thought he was too good to play in the MLS (and he is). Do I think he’s premier league caliber? No, not yet. But kid is good.— Hoya Paranoia (@_HoyaParanoia_) May 25, 2021

And those guys are both good players, it's just not a great idea to jump into the deep end. For some, though, it's a dream to play in Europe, even if not at the highest stages, and it's pretty hard to do so once you come back to MLS.
I'll admit that I'd never heard of him. Reminds me of when Anton Peterlin and Cody Arnoux came from out of nowhere to sign with Everton in 2009. I'll look forward to keeping an eye on Montes.
Of course I’m rooting for him but at this point; he’s not even a pretender on my player pool roster yet.
