I saw him doing Little League baseball and sumo wrestling. Is this the kind of guy you want doing soccer matches a guy who does kids baseball and big fat guys pushing each other

From a Google search, found on an ESPN page that no longer has an active link:

Jack Edwards served as an anchor/reporter for SportsCenter since he joined ESPN in August 1991. He also occasionally hosted ESPN Radio's Sunday morning program.

Edwards was a correspondent for the 1991 Emmy Award-winning program Outside The Lines: Steroids- Whatever It Takes. He investigated American football players and their attitude of doing whatever it takes to win. In 1992, provided reports for SportsCenter from Albertville, France during the Olympic Winter Games.

Edwards had worked for ESPN on a freelance basis from 1981-87 on a variety of events including Grand Prix and Davis Cup tennis, World Cup and freestyle skiing, ski jumping and collegiate gymnastics and diving. Other freelance assignments have included the 1988 Winter Olympics for ABC Sports and alpine skiing events from France for CBS Sports in early 1991.

From 1985-91, Edwards worked as a sports reporter for WHDH-TV, the then-CBS affiliate in Boston. While there, his assignments included the American League Championship Series and World Series, the Super Bowl, the NBA playoffs, the NCAA Basketball Final Four and the Stanley Cup playoffs.

He began his career as a news reporter and sports director at WGIR-AM in Manchester, N.H., in 1979. He worked there until he landed his first job in television -- as sports director for WMUR-TV in Manchester in 1981. Two years later he moved to WJAR-TV in Providence, R.I., and served as a sports anchor/reporter until 1985.

In 1979, Edwards graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor's degree in communications.

Edwards was born March 24, 1957.

I'm no Jack Edwards fan, but he's still better than plenty of his critics. First in that line is SportBoy321.

I have found a poster boy for the pathetic mass I reference in nearly every defense of Jack Edwards' announcing abilities.

Jack is the gold standard of soccer play-by-play announcers in this country. His wit, his insight, and his enthusiasm combine to make him such, and this is clearly beyond your understanding.

So, I suggest you rouse yourself from the semi-coma you've lapsed into sitting on your leather easy chair, put down your Smirnoff Ice, and actually listen to him call a soccer game rather than post knee-jerk reactions that are likely meant to cover up for any one of your numerous shortcomings.

Jack is what this country needs for soccer. Don't even start with Jack being biased and favoring US, because for those of you who don't know it, this is the United States.

Hey guy! At least he's not Seamus F*#&ing Malin okay? No one can ruin a game like that guy.

With no disrespect to Glenn Davis intended, I really missed Jack Edwards yesterday on the MLS match. Sometimes you don't know what you got 'til it's gone, to quote Joni Mitchell.

Jack and Ty, in my opinion are the best. But what was wrong with Seamus or Glenn?

Oh my f%*$@ing GOD! Seamus Malin is a blind old fart who call the game one way, and then has to be constantly corrected for it. He once commented that a player who was writhing around in agony on the ground, holding his foot, was just trying to fake a knee injury.........a knee injury.....he's holding his freaking foot and this blind bastard calls it a knee injury. Wanna know who this "Faker" was? David Beckham this past spring against Deportivo when that slimy spanish slut broke his foot!

Yes Jack and Ty can be dumb but they are funny. They are unqiue. With out them I would be disappointed and because of them I have learned to listen more carefully to what other people say and what I say just to pick up on weird things.

I don't think any of the announcers in Europe who do Premiership games or Serie A games are also doing sumo wrestling and youth soccer games. Doing little league baseball and sumo wrestling is fine for a young announcer in his early career but if your 45 yrs old and still doing it you shouldn't be held in high regard.

First of all, you take any assignment that's assigned to you. These announcers do not only cover one sport. The fact that Jack can cover soccer, sumo wrestling, and Little League Baseball is a good sign. Also, Jack does the NHL as well. For example, I once saw Derek Rae and Tommy Smyth doing some sort of outdoor kind of thing with throwing contests. Last year, Rob Stone was doing some outdoor event that had some gun shooting and stuff.

    Wah, wah, wah.

    Let's see.
European Footaller and American Footballer. Both can make millions of bucks a year with the garden variety players still making more than I can imagine.

European Football broadcaster and American Football broadcaster. Some of them make more money in a year (John Madden, Marvin Tyler) than I will possibly make in my life.

    Now compare
American Soccer Player and American Soccer broadcasters: I make more money than most of these guys. And their careers tend to be short.

Players quit to league to go to dentistry school for a reason. Announcers do other things like boxing, sumo, hockey, etc... because it carries a paycheck. Last time I checked, Soccer broadcasting in the United States was not a 52 week a year job.

Get over yourself. You're exactly the type of *snob* we don't need. Don't you have a Serie A game to watch or something?
