Jack de Vries signed a home grown contract with the Philadelphia Union on Tuesday. The following information came out in the process: "There were offers from European clubs including Dutch power PSV Eindhoven... and Denmark’s FC Copenhagen." He has Dutch citizenship, so non-EU minimum salary requirements would not have been an issue at PSV and could have gone to Europe before his 18th birthday. de Vries also apparently spent some time in the Anderlecht academy. He is a '02 winger that was part of the US squad at the 2019 CONCACAF U-17 Championship.
We've heard about Tanner Tessmann going to Venezia and yes, they're very much in the running for Gianluca Busio too. I've heard rumblings also that they're trying to bring in Philly homegrown Jack De Vries on loan (De Vries has a Dutch passport, which makes it easier)— Brian Sciaretta (@BrianSciaretta) July 9, 2021 Obviously such a loan would only be contingent on De Vries being medically cleared soon - which is a possibility.— Brian Sciaretta (@BrianSciaretta) July 9, 2021
Good to know: Jack de Vries has been in concussion protocol since preseason so not sure where this puts him at present https://t.co/5xyC66hUet— Philadelphia Soccer Now (@phlsoccernow) July 9, 2021
VenezYA: Expecting the Jack de Vries loan from the Philadelphia Union to Venezia to be announced soon— Brian Sciaretta (@BrianSciaretta) August 16, 2021
What in the actual eff are they doing? It's like they are just throwing darts at a dartboard to hit someone American. Put me in the camp of thinking this directive isn't going to go well and then Americans are probably going to be scapegoated. There is a growing market many teams should be trying to get in on. But they could more precision target the more diamond in the rough Americans like Dane Murphy (Barnsley, Nottingham Forest). Cuevas and KHF are out there as victims of Galaxy mistrust and/or that weird Wolfsburg alliance, for examples.Or they could go harder after the blue-chippers such as Clark, Cowell, Araujo, etc. or none at all. They don't seem to be doing either. Busio is borderline blue-chip, but I still have qualms about his physical ability and vision in the final 3rd. Tessmann wasn't even a legit starter at FCD. De Vries was about 10th on the pecking order of Philly hg's the last few yrs. It all seems very slapdash and destined to disappoint.
I agree that the pickups of Americans who might not be good enough besides Busio seems quite odd. If this move goes through it’s almost certainly not going to be with Venezia’s first team. The only thing I can think of is Venezia is hoping that they can escape relegation and flip some of these younger players for a good chunk of change. Pretty risky strategy if true. Not sure what De Vries gets out of this unless he wants to get a feel for life/play abroad.
He’s obviously not gonna walk into the first team, but it’s not exactly like Venezia are loaded with Serie A level talent anyway. He could get some runout if he impresses. Hopefully there’s an affordable option to buy, so they have a little more incentive to try to develop him.
quoting myself here, but based on what I saw last week, I wouldn’t be shocked if he sees some playing time. Venezia’s average player is not Serie A quality- not arguing that de Vries is either… I honestly haven’t seen nearly enough of him to have an opinion.
Have only heard about De Vries in passing. Anyone been following this kid that can describe what kind of player he is?
"Venezia FC is pleased to announce the signing of American midfielder Jack de Vries, 19, on loan from the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer. De Vries will join the club’s Primavera side for the 2021/22 season. Born in the United States, de Vries moved to Belgium and spent three years in the academy of Anderlecht before moving back the States and joining the academy of the Union. In August 2019, the Union signed de Vries to an MLS Homegrown Player contract, the 12th in club history. ... At the international level, de Vries made two appearances for the United States U-17 national team at the 2019 CONCACAF U-17 Championship."
I need to see more from De Vries but he seems decent in limited minutes I am just not sure he's any better than next wave of Philly youngsters - Sullivan and the younger Aaronson have impressed me quite a bit. To a lesser extent - McGlynn
Yesterday he helped the u19 team win 7-1, scoring 2 goals. Not a bad start for him. https://www.transfermarkt.com/jack-de-vries/leistungsdaten/spieler/659781
