Yeah, engrish.com is what you're thinking of. I also laugh when I see some kanji tattoos. You'd think they'd ask a Japanese or Chinese guy before getting inked, but no. Or maybe they did ask and their Asian friends were messing with them. But there's a site that sells t-shirts with stupid Japanese phrases. "Baka Gaijin" My favorite, which I can't find any more, is one that says "I am a stupid American".
It's all good But that's the thing. We generally don't have foreign words in our teams names. Hence, my lame attempt at humor about the Portland Kitsunes or the Houston Biscotti. But hey, the fans over there love their teams goofy names and all, and that's what counts. I was just wondering where the names came from.
I'd buy one and send it to the White House. Anyway, thanks for helping me understand the nature of J-League team names. The closest I can get to watching the J-League is watching Football Asia on FSW. The Japanese fans are amazing. I wish we had that kind of fan craziness over here. I also wish FSW with start broadcasting J-League games in addition to the Euro leagues.
actually Fox Sports World now has a show called "Ganbare!" which is dedicated to only the J-League. You can imagine the sounds coming from my apartment when I saw this on TV the other day! I think everyone in central Illinois thinks I got lucky or something.
LOL....oops, i am a gaijin too. But is there anyone stupid enough put a tattoo that says "I am a stupid American"? Or a shirt rather.
loooooooool someone pinch me and i hope frown is shown!!! i've seen gaijins wearing a cap saying 「牛」、「足」、「猫」or some like that but this one is way too cool!!
I taped Ganbare! last night and watched it this morning. Very cool. Again, the Japanese fans are astounding. It's like almost a whole stadium of Section 8 or the Sreaming Eagles. Oh to see that kind of fan support in MLS...
Section 8 is great (hey it rhymes!), and I usually don't sit in section 8 (yeah, I'm not hardcore) but Chicago in general has a pretty good atmosphere. However when I went to Columbus for the MLS Cup a few years ago, it was horrible, the loudest people there were the Chicago Fire fans, and the Fire weren't even playing............. Sort of hit and miss. Usually J-League is pretty decent, but I lived in Fukuoka, and when times were good things were amazing, but things got bad, and the fans sort started to dissapear. I wasn't a fan of Fukuoka, so I usually sat in the vistors section, unless it was a team I really hated that was playing against Fukuoka. But if you go to a game where soccer is bigger, such as Shizuoka, oh man, its such a great atmosphere............ Maybe I can get a job in Iwata someday so I can be a Jubilo season ticket holder.
Eastern Japan generally has stronger support for soccer than the West. The Shizuoka clubs, Kashima, Urawa, Sendai, Niigata and FC Tokyo probably have the best support, while Kobe and Kyoto get pretty small crowds. watanabe, you should get a job with Yamaha. They're headquartered in Hamamatsu right? Or you could be a unagi fisher.
In Kobe/Osaka, they only care about Hanshin Tigers, the Kobe pro baseball team. But I thought kobe started to get a lot of fan after Ilhan joined the club?
There's a huge difference in Kobe's attendance when Ilhan plays and when he dosen't play. He's only played one home game and missed the rest with a knee injury. Guess which game he played in: Week 1: 29, 834 Week 3: 13,269 Week 5: 10,079 Week 6: 10,035 Not very promising. They can only hope Ilhan can stay healthy when he comes back. On the other hand, Ichihara vs Niigata drew 19,694 fans to Tokyo's National Stadium. Even though on Ichihara was official home side, 12,000 Niigata supporters showed up, taking a chartered 12-car bullet train to Tokyo.
well, we all know that Nigata got a huge number of royal fans. They drew avg. of 30-40k on home games last year, and the amazing part is that they were J2 last year.
And now you know! And knowing is half the battle! G I JOeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee sorry I watch too many cartoons.........
Re: Thank you, skipshady! Like everyone else, I laughed at that and was thankful when they wised up and added the "-ards".
JLeague names have european names added to their japanese names, plus they have a mascot as well. THAT IS THE REASON.
Nagoya is named "Grampus Eight" due to an old folktale about eight wales blowing water on something that was burning (an old castle?), thus saving it from the fire. (got that from Ultra Nippon)
