I like Ives and I like the tone of the article. That being said, he claimed that our recent teams have won no trophies. That's, of course, not true. Back to back Supporters Shields are a huge accomplishment. I know others disagree, but I don't look back on the last two seasons from a fan's viewpoint as a failure. The United front office is saying that one major trophy isn't enough. I love the attitude. I also happen to think that the international competitions (CCC & new Champions League) are the reason we made the upgrade, not because of MLS Cup.
GUTuna beat me to the punch - I was gonna say the same thing. We've got three trophies over the past four years. It's not just that we've had, y'know, some success, but no one in MLS (except, I think, SJ/Houston) has won as many trophies over that span.
I think you could actually make the arguement that the Supporters Shield is the more prestigious of the two. It certainly seems to more accurately signify who the best team in MLS is.
Totally agree. So many great games and goals at RFK. Reading the entire Zurawski thread on the C-bus board just reinforced how good we've had it. I really doubt anyone here expects him to surpass what Marco and Jaime have done, and I personally don't expect him to surpass what Christian did. If he can be as good over the next two years as Gomez was over the prior two years, I'll be thrilled. Nice write-up by Ives, and yep, I'm getting excited, too.
If he is only as good as Christian was over the past two years, I'll be disappointed. People need to remember what quality of player this is. He is a genuine world-class player. After an adjustment period, if he gets his head into the game and plays with real desire, we might witness the best #10 this league has ever seen.
agreed. this is a player who merely one year ago was the best player for one of the best teams on the continent - river plate. i fully expect him to be the best player for dcu and an example like marco was for what a latin #10 should be...
