The much talked about A-League expansion into Syracuse will become a reality for 2003. As per the Post-Standard article today (2 Nov 02) http://www.syracuse.com/sports/poststandard/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1036229918264111.xml some notes: It will be an A-League franchise. A previous article didn't make it clear wether it would be a A-League, DIII or PDL - mostly because the writer didn't know what he was talking about. It will be played at P&C Stadium, which is a county owned baseball stadium. Seats around 10,000, but plays on artificial turf! (Dear God!) I don't have the dimensions of the stadium, but the playing field is an exact duplicate of Toronto's Skydome. Syracuse is the AAA farmclub for the Blue Jays.
I thought that any new teams in the A-League were not allowed to play on astroturf. Oh well sounds like the A-League is desperate.
Good article. This part doesn't sound appealing to die-hard fans: "Tim knows how to create an event within an event," Cappuccilli said. "He knows how to create excitement, fun and entertainment around whatever the event is. That's what could draw people aside from the sport." but I suppose it's a fact of life. Can somebody explain this: There's one other factor that could impact professional soccer's future in Syracuse. Discretionary dollars and market size aside, soccer may be 'Destiny-ed' to succeed. "The soccer team will be sitting right up there next to the Regional Market with Destiny getting ready to come in," Arnold said. "That location will be prime real estate. You package the team with Destiny, once that's up and running, and you could play off that traffic there." Is "Destiny" the Mall of America equivalent they're planning for Syracuse?
Newsflash! Syracuse's leading name is Salty Dogs (Slutty Bitches comes to mind ), at 51% with 26% to its nearest rivals. Other choices: Shamrocks, Evolution and Titans.
Plus, it would offend the fundamentalists. Could be worse. They could be trying to play off the only other names Americans associate with Syracuse sports. Though the Syracuse Citrus has a decent, if geographically inaccurate, ring to it.
WEll best of luck. They are in our division. I cant wait for the road trip to Syracuse to show them what real fans are about!!! How are they gonna pick their players?
You know, the winner in the name the team contest in Oakland in 1959 was the Senors. The owners over-ruled the fans and went with the second place choice: the Raiders. Hopefully the owners in Syracusa will do the same. Does P&C at least use the same surface as SkyDome? It's Astrograss, which is a little (and I mean little) better than Astroturf.
Skydome actually uses 2 surfaces. A better surface for the Blue Jays, and a decrepit one for the Argos. You're right though. Astrograss is a "little" better than astroturf but both are horrible for soccer.
If memory serves, the last couple of A League teams that tried to play on artificial turf has folded pretty quickly. "Pure" soccer fans just won't support it. Are there any A League teams currently playing on turf today?
The last ones I remember were Seattle and Rochester (before Frontier) and they're still around... and Portland too but I think you were aiming this mostly at astroturf and other decidedly non-grasslike surfaces... Don't remember who else had astroturf from several years back. As for the second statement, that is very true, we had that problem for the last few years, a lot of people that would have come to support the team don't because of the astroturf, gridiron lines painted on the narrow pitch. I think the only other artificial pitches now are the NexTurf in Portland and FieldTurf in Seattle.
Vancouver 86ers played part of the 1995 season on artificial turf at BC Place while renovations were being done on Swangard stadium. The players clearly weren't used to the surface and the quality of play was horrible.
What did they renovate at Swangard, anyway? I never saw a difference. Did go to a BC Place game- as bad as advertised. El Paso Patriots are leaning toward playing in the Sun Bowl next season- AstroPlay (a little harder than FieldTurf, same sort of grass texture, still don't want to slide on it).
They increased the actual size of the stadium area (not capacity) and re-did the pitch so that it is FIFA international size dimensions, they installed a new running track and I believe thats when they installed the permanent bleachers on the East side of the stadium. Of course none of the renovations actually improved the experience of visiting the stadium for the fans.
Heck, with those name choices, it wouldn't hurt to bring back the name of their ASL team back in the 60's, the Scorpions.
Re: Re: It's official! A-League is coming to Syracuse Yeah, especially since they've been watching brilliant soccer played across a baseball diamond.
