The highlight's from today's friendly are below. At 1:59 Johannsson has a header saved from just outside the six. In the previous highlight Johannsson checks to the ball and Lech Poznań play the ball to the winger who has run into the space Johannsson vacated.

After Johannsson's move to Lech Poznań in February, he registered 2 goals in 519 minutes (9 appearances including 5 starts) of Ekstraklasa play. Lech Poznań finished finished in 11th.

He also played 90 minutes (1 start) in the Polish Cup. Lech Poznań were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

He's been healthy* for two years. It's his record since turning pro.

    ----
    * As in not so injured that he missed several games.

I read the article (via translate because I sure as shit can't read Polish). I couldn't glean any info about how this severe hand injury occurred (it may have happened in a recent game against Wisla Pulawy), but they said it's bad enough that he likely won't appear for Lech Poznan again since his contract is up in December. What the hell did he do????

Well, it was too beautiful to last.

It was during a second division match of Poznań II against a just-promoted team, Wisła Puławy. Aron scored two goals and they won 4-1 (after losing the opening game 1-0), but Aron fell on his hand before the break and had to be replaced. Later, they confirmed the injury was very severe, so Aron is out.

The setup in Poland allows the big clubs that have multiple teams in the league system to move players at their convenience, so even if playing for Lech Poznań II in the second division, Aron could have been called for first division games at any point.

The result is that their coach, Maciej Skorża, now is shopping for a backup striker (they play with only one, their #1 is the Swede Michael Ishak, his backup is the Pole Artur Sobiech, so Aron was the backup to the backup).

The guy is made of glass. How does one fall on one's hand so badly that he'll be out of playing soccer for at least 4 months?

Yes, although there is a bit of subtext of the new coach not rating him at all (has not played for the first team since he arrived), and preferring a washed out Polish guy who's even older than Aron for the main team (Sobiech), who just arrived from a mid-table Turkish club.

So it could be a bit of him playing the board to get the cash to get a better striker, too. Although knowing Aron, this is indeed a bad one and he'll need some luck to get someone to come rescue him.

In a recent interview (in Poland, but Aron was replying in English) he said he was working towards being considered by the USA although he thought it was very unlikely with all the young talent the US now has. He talked about the Gold Cup, how he didn't regret choosing the US as it was the best decision for him and his family, and how he wishes he had had more chances to play for the NT.

He also mentions he loves Iceland too, both countries are in his heart, but his plans for the future include living in the USA after retiring. So we may see him in MLS at some point.

Some of the interview (transcript) is here, but it was in full in a podcast somewhere --sadly, I'm getting to that age where I find things online only once.

He was looking for an MLS gig before choosing Lech Poznań.

He has just been injured too much

Apparently the rumor is another left wing. they only have four wings, with two spots, while they have four CFs, for one spot

Man such a good player, such a great finisher, so creative with his goal-scoring.

His contract is up in December and the coach doesn't rate him. Best to take a payoff now and focus on rehab - in a country where he speaks the language and with doctors of your choosing. Rehab is grueling psychologically for players, as Aron knows better than anybody. Why spend it with a club you're leaving anyway, in a country you don't know the language of and where the sports medicine isn't likely to be as good as the USA, Germany or Sweden.

He'll focus on staying physically fit and, since he's been released by Poznan, he'll be a free agent well before the winter windows open. If a club is in urgent need of reinforcements, he can strike a good deal.

So sad what's happened to Aron, he was such a great talent and could have been one of best strikers ever.

Hopefully he's able to recover and find one more chance, perhaps in MLS, Denmark, or Sweden.

Was spotted around Schalke, but just sounds like a social visit:

Aron Johannsson is back in Germany and was spotted at Schalke today. The striker, who is currently without a club, is currently visiting his friend from his youth in Iceland, Schalke's Victor Palsson, and watched their game against Ingolstadt in the S04 stadium.

With his injury history, 30 is a good age to hang the boots.

Wonder if he rubbed Odin or Freya the wrong way when he chose the US over Iceland. He'll never get into Valhalla now.
