i don't understand, you said he was washed up one post, then not the next, maybe you meant something different in your post #1021?

That is not what I meant at all. Maybe I wasn't explaining myself. Actually, what I meant to say or what I implied anyway was that in November everyone says these guys are washed up and then in May/June when it comes time to pick the final 23 man roster in Coverciano, those guys end up being picked to play for the national team! Totti is included in the same group as the rest. The only trouble is you can only take 4-5 forwards to the EUROS or the World Cup and someone has to end up staying at home.

Inzaghi did not play in one qualifier and was not picked at all until the final 23 were named. Vieri was constantly picked and when Lippi first took over he always started ahead of Toni unless he was hurt or was not picked because of injuries. If he had not been injured it did not matter how many goals he scored because Vieri was guaranteed a spot on that team by Lippi. The only reason Inzaghi was picked because there was nobody else that Lippi trusted. And really I do not think he wanted Inzaghi on that team but was forced to take him because of all the factors involved.

With regards to the moment I think Vieri would be the best possible backup for Toni because it is clear that he can still play at a high level. He has much more experience and goals compared to his potential rivals. He will not play 90 minutes but coming off the bench like he does for Fiorentina I think he could be a weapon more so than Gilardino Iaquinta or Luccarelli. He has already shown this in games against Roma and Juventus when he came on late and forced PK's that allowed Fiorentina to come from behind and get a tie. Those other guys are not game deciders like Vieri.

You are right about Lippi & Inzaghi. I think Lippi no longer cared to have for two reasons. First because he didn't get along with Del Piero and then there was also a rumor that when Lippi was projected to be on his way back to Juve after he was fired from Inter Pippo was dating Lippi's daughter Stefania which Lippi did not appreciate. Its no wonder that the very next year Inzaghi was with Milan.

After today's Juve - Inter game .... I am sure Laquinta and Camo if fit will be called vs Scotland.

and if Palladino keeps playing like this he could be called in the near future...

First of all, Toni is one of the scariest weapon "his height and scoring with his height". There is not much in current Italian player has such ability with scoring with head. Still, although Vieri is kind of old for his national team call up but I believe in his faith, he has the scoring ability like no others that I could seen yet. He can score with his head, and either foot because he has such strong and muscular body and his shots are obviously powerful. However, he is almost getting slow down from his peak performance but still he can provide some harm to opponents. He can't be playing for full 90 minutes, he still can come on as substitute. As with his experience and scoring ability, if he could ever match up with fast pace youngster or any reliable forward, I believe there could be a spark of magic happen once again.

Inzaghi and Del Piero are too small for their body structure, if they ever faced opponents like France or Germany defenders. The body contacts that pressurize by the opponents could make them fall down on the grounds more than you can count. And they are kind of old to be in the national team again.

As for my favorite, Gilardino has the pace and the ambition of scoring and making opportunities. As I seen his performance in the friendly match against South Africa, although he didn't score any goal but I could see somehow the goals are coming because of his appearance. I see he can hold and control the ball in front of the defenders as this is what Vieri always could do, but seldom to see other Italian players could manage this well. If ever one that could replace Vieri, I believe Gilardino will be the one although he is not getting much appearance in his club.

Di natalie is good but still I believe Gilardino can do a better job than him.

As for why Lippi bringing Inzaghi to the world cup, as what I think I believe he is the only expert that can break through opponents' offside trap, sometimes he could be crucial when the team is a goal down or losing, he can make surprises in anytime. Just like how he scored against Czech Republic in 2006 world cup.

Best games for overall play are the Scotland games. Seems we play much better when we're always under pressure (Scotland, Germany, etc). Not France though. Always have boring games with them (boring in terms of actual goals, not events).

This is true. Italy always plays down to an inferior opponent and plays its best soccer when they are up against tougher or good teams. I guess both teams have to play "il bell gioco" in order to show their best stuff.
