Perrotta is English Calabrese but I don't think he can speak the language because he moved back to Calabria with his family when he was 5 I believe it was. LOL, Geoff Hurst.....I believe I met him when I was a kid at a soccer function when the Seattle Sounders came to town. He was there an no one knew him and he said, "hi , I'm Geoff Hurst I scored 3 goals in a WC Final"!
Pagliuca over Zoff?!? No Baresi, Scirea, Gentile, Giga Riva?!? Please go back to the Portuguese forums troll. I'm sick of your formations that change daily. For this reason we need an unrep button
He obviously meant within the last 15-25 years or so as he mentions that earlier in the conversation and that none of these players are from before 1990
Its understandable if he didn't grow up watching those players. I've been a Serie A fan since the 70's and even though I read about the history of players and teams and saw all the old highlight videos, I couldn't begin to judge players since before then. The game clearly has changed and I think the players of today are too powerful for the old guard to compete with. Marco Tardelli stated once that the training methods and the running is a lot different today. This isn't saying the old guys couldn't play today though. He said many times he played scrimmages while he was a coach against today's players and he showed that he was a lot better than they were so he said if they had the same training methods and same approach on the game in the 70's and 80's as they do now, maybe a lot of those athletes could adjust just as easily. Again, it was just a different time. The best all around player I ever saw from 1975 onward was Roberto Baggio. The best goal scorer was Giorgio Chinaglia , the best midfielder was Bruno Conti and the best defenders in my opinion were Scirea, Maldini and Baresi. I can't say today that I've seen anyone equal these players skills and abilities.
I remember even hearing some of the older old school claim that Rivera and Facchetti were both as good or better than Baggio and Maldini. I have my doubts, but really how can we/I comment for sure not having watched them regularly?
You look at the old games though and the pace was a lot slower. Facchetti could only kick with one foot. The same with Riva. I'm sure they could play today if they didn't smoke or drink......
On the domenica sportiva last night, Roberto Bonnisegna stated that the 1970 WC team had 6 players from Cagliari! Now there is a first, and probably a last!
Here's my top 15 from last 5 years: The selections are heavily weighted towards the side from Euro '12 on the basis of success in that tournament. Buffon, Bonucci, Chiellini, Pirlo, Marchisio, Montolivo, De Rossi, Balotelli, Cassano, Giaccherini, Darmian, Candreva, Motta, Abate, Barzagli
Abate? Giaccherini?! You really don't watch any Serie A at all do you? Why say of the last 15 years and keep out Totti, Nesta, Zambrotta Cannavaro, just to name a few? Just say the team of 2012, when you started watching and include Darmian?
You make a good point. They give you a card today for breathing the wrong way. I think it all started with the 1990 WC when the refs were card happy. Not sure about yellow cards but Gaetano Scirea was never red carded. Auguri Gaetano: oggi Scirea avrebbe compiuto 62 anni
