that was voted the second best goal that season. rijkaards goal against napoli was first. totos bicycle kick from the edge of the box, who everyone thought would win, was third. that goal by Vialli was classic. he was very tough and unafraid as a player. always gave it his all.
Do you know any websites which have any summaries or clips of the goals? If not, would you be able to give me some details of the Rijkaard goal?
i dont know anything like that. i have that game on tape. milan won 5-0. gullit gets the ball on the right centre of midfield. he passes long and hig up to van basten who is standing with his back against goal about 20 meters out. he takes it down perfectly with a defender on his back. rijkaard makes a run and van basten flicks the ball through and rijkaard finishes low and hard on the volley close to the left post.

I was wondering how long Giannini would last. For those that don't understand Italian, here's an English bio I did of him in my Great Italian Player Thread: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4522959&postcount=48
If our team didn't already have Antognoni, we would surely have swooped for the Prince. He's a Roma legend (Totti had a picture of Giannini on his wall when growing up, they say). Great pick. I really think that Italy have suffered for a lack of midfielders like Giannini in recent years. He had true class and could link defense and attack. Two-way battlers like Tardelli have also been lacking. But, maybe De Rossi and Aquilani will develop into world-class players. That would be great.
It is obviously subjective, but Bettega was awesome in 78, he scored two goals and created lots of chances. Rossi scored three goals, he was more of a poucher, though, not as much involved in creating. But certainly Bettega-Rossi was a partnership that worked. You might be thinking of Causio, who also had a great cup, or maybe Scirea. The defense was very solid. Really, several players already picked in this draft played well in 78. Benetti as well. Had it not been for the loss to Holland, in an excellent match which could have gone either way, they would have been finalists. And they'd beaten Argentina in the group stage already. So, tell us, who's the one you had in mind? (assuming its somebody who's been picked already, of course).
I think it's a bit of a myth that Rossi was just a poacher. He assisted Bettega's great goal vs. Argentina and created Causio's goal vs. Brazil, in addition to scoring three of his own. You can't ask a striker to do more than score goals and create chances and Rossi did those things in '78. The other mark against Bettega for me (speaking of the '78 WC, again) was his performance vs. W. Germany. Italy might have gone to the final if he had just put away some of the sitters that game. But he didn't and everything thus came down to the Austria and Holland matches, and Rossi scored in the Austria match while Bettega faded. I'm being harsh but there you have it. I also think Scirea could get a shout for his '78 performance, he was definitely class.
Forgot to link Vialli goals Gianluca Vialli http://www.numeri10.it/html/omaggioa/giocatori/menu/vialli.htm
Zambrotta was taken. Definitely one of the most versatile players Italy has ever seen. He actually started out as a center-midfielder at Bari, then he was moved to the wing, and then we was converted into a fullback. He really can play anywhere. Spartak/Hawkz are up next.
Zambrotta's been world-class for three years--good pick. He's also the perfect professional and team player, never gives less than 100 percent. And, if you'd seen a picture of Zambrotta's wife, you'd know why he never complains.
We won't be making our pick tonight as Hawkz and I haven't crossed paths today. But tomorrow it should be up.
Zambrotta is an amazing player, he can play any position, im happy we got him. I wasn't surprised to say the least, I think our whole team played for Juve if im not mistaken..lol
Interesting note: 3 of the 4 defenders on my team at least once captained his club to a European Cup triumph(C. Maldini 1963, Picchi 1964, 1965, and Tassotti 1994). And the 4th defender(Facchetti) captained Italy to the 1968 European Championship win and the 1970 World Cup Runners-up.
Dante and Greg had a nice pick with Anastasi, who rounds out their attack (which already includes Meazza and Sandro Mazzola). Our team went for Roberto Rosato, a great defender of the mid 60s to early 70s, which is really Italy's most famous period in terms of defensive prowess. Rosato was a great man-marker and stopper and we like that he can be used as a right-back as well. Duck and Berga are up now.
If we look at the highlights of the goals, Sempre is right, the way he described them. But my memory (although it was a long time ago and I was a teenager), is that when it came to Italy, everybody in Argentina, from the magazines like El Grafico to the fans, was talking mostly about Bettega. Maybe because he tended to be more spectacular the way he played? Who knows. At any rate, we can say that the Bettega/Rossi combo worked very well, for the most part, with five goals between the two of them. Although it's true that Bettega missed some easy chances in the key match against West Germany.
