On Thursday at 10:00 P.M. local/9:00 P.M. CET/3:00 P.M. USA Eastern, Maccabi Tel Aviv hosts Shakhtar Donetsk in the Round of 32 first leg. I don't have any hope of Maccabi Tel Aviv not losing in Ukraine (Shakhtar plays their UEFA games in a different stadium), so I think this is Maccabi Tel Aviv and Israel's last chance for a coefficient point. Maccabi Tel Aviv got a draw hosting Villarreal of Spain, who is by far the best club they faced this season. It will be a great season for Israel even if Maccabi Tel Aviv loses both games. Taking the mean of eleven odds from https://www.smartbets.com/football/fc-shakhtar-donetsk-maccabi-tel-aviv/ makes these probabilities:

Maccabi Tel Aviv win: 22.6 percent
    Draw: 24.9 percent
    Shakhtar Donetsk win: 52.6 percent

It adds up to 100.1 percent due to rounding.

Maccabi Tel Aviv 0-2 Shakhtar Donetsk

Shakhtar scored in the 31st minute. At halftime, Shakhtar had 68 percent of the possession, each club had 3 shots, and Shakhtar had the only 2 shots on goal. In the second half, Maccabi Tel Aviv (hereafter MTA) had 40 percent of the possession, more shots, and more shots on goal, but they didn't score. Shakhtar scored in the 90+3rd minute. The statistics were 64 percent of the possession by Shakhtar, MTA with more shots (12 to 10), Shakhtar with more shots on goal (5 to 4), Shakhtar with more combined free kicks and corner kicks (19 to 13, 59.4 percent for Shakhtar), Shakhtar with more passes (678 to 344, 66.3 percent for Shakhtar), Shakhtar with more completed passes (606 to 276, 68.7 percent for Shakhtar), Shakhtar with a higher pass completion percentage (606/678 = 89.4 percent to 276/344 = 80.2 percent), Shakhtar with more attacks (150 to 63, 70.4 percent for Shakhtar), Shakhtar with more dangerous attacks (53 to 33, 61.6 percent for Shakhtar), MTA with a higher percentage of attacks that were dangerous (33/63 = 52.4 percent to 53/150 = 35.3 percent), MTA with a higher percentage of dangeorus attacks that produced shots (12/33 = 36.4 percent to 10/53 = 18.9 percent), and MTA with a higher percentage of dangerous attacks that produced shots on goal (4/33 = 12.1 percent to 5/53 = 9.4 percent). I am assuming that all shots came from dangerous attacks because given that there were 22 shots and 86 dangerous attacks I do not see how any shots could not have come from dangerous attacks).

Israel's country coefficient will finish at 7.000 assuming they lose in Ukraine. Israel is ninth and could be passed by Austria, Ukraine, and Belgium, but Israel will probably finish no worse than 12th. When Israel had a 7.250 in 2009-2010 they were 12th. As I posted last year, Israel's best season was 2001-2002 with 8.333, 2009-2010 was second with 7.250, and this season is third. For the five seasons ending this season, Israel will finish 21st, which is up from 23rd after 2019-2020 and 27th after 2018-2019. At the start of next season, Israel's 6.750 from 2016-2017 will drop out, and Israel will be 23rd.

Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 Maccabi Tel Aviv (3-0 aggregate)

The only goal was a penalty kick in the 67th minute. Each club had only 2 shots on goal. Israel finished the season with a 7.000 coefficient and will be ninth, tenth, or eleventh of 55 countries, which is a better ranking than when Israel was twelfth with 7.250 in 2009-2010. Israel's best coefficient and ranking were eighth with 8.333 in 2001-2002, and there were fewer games and coefficient points then.

Zahavi is in tremendous form. He now has 7 goals in his last 9 matches for PSV. Much to my annoyance, two goals of those have now come against Olympiacos and PSV are in a good position to progress into the next round. It's only half-time, but we'll see.

We'll see how Zahavi does for the National Team next month. It doesn't fit the topic title because you didn't post about Israeli clubs, but I'm still happy somebody other than me posted.

With Austria and Belgium having all their clubs out, the only country that can pass Israel for this season is Ukraine, so Israel will finish in the top ten. Molde, Slavia Prague, Dinamo Zagreb, Young Boys, and Olympiakos Piraeus are the only club left from their country and would have to win several games against much better clubs in order for any of those countries to pass Israel. For the five season sum, Israel is 21sth with 24.375 and will finish that way. The only country behind Israel with a club remaining is Norway at 20.500. Even if Molde wins seven games to win the Europa League, that would get Norway up to 24.000, so Norway can't pass Israel. When next season starts and 2016-2017 drops out, Israel will fall to 23rd with 17.625 because they had a 6.750 in 2016-2017.
