If true we have ********ed up

I get that wages will be huge - but wages for all top players are now huge.

It’s a good thing we won the summer transfer window, because otherwise we’d be well f.ucked about now.

That 20 mill must = he's getting an enormous signing on bonus and huuuge wages from MC.

But why CP would agree that fee is beyond me. It's about 50% less than they'd have received from us a few months ago.

City are bulking up for sure. They will likely catch Arsenal this year for the title, sadly.

And a big sign on bonus.

but ... we determined last summer we needed him. The 15m fee savings can easily cover the wage difference.

guessing however that we didn't want to start someone at such crazy numbers.

Right, because as far as I know, only VVD and Salah make more than that. If we paid Guehi that much, then how will Wirtz/Ekitike/Isak etc feel.

whereas MC keep any unhappy players quiet by buying villas in the UAE for their family members.

    That they signed some contracts?

Also - why should 22 yr old Ekiteke feel anything - he hasn't been a big name for very long. Isak (might have a private grumble) and Wirtz, to some extent yes, too, as he was a very hot property...

True, but had they signed Guehi in July, he’d have been hard pushed to see wages much north of 200k a week. He was on 50k a week at Palace.

Couldn't find a city called Guehi, but Diahouin is very close to Guehiebly which is a city in the Ivory Coast...

Must admit I'm feeling bad about things right now. :(:(

    Looking ahead:

    - Yes it's possible that we could make an out-of-left-field signing between now and Feb 2nd that would solve our backline problems or kickstart our strikers.
    - It's even possible that we could make more than one out-of-left-field signing between now and Feb 2nd that that does both those things.
    - But right now none of that looks likely, at all.
    - Which would mean we'd play our existing squad into the ground
    - And that assumes no big injuries (just about anywhere in the squad) which would kill us dead.
    - Our chances of getting top 4/5 this season would be so slim as to be see-through.
    - Same with our chances of winning the CL.
    - No CL next season harms our chances of signing top-choice guys in the summer.

But even if we do sign top-drawer guys in the summer ....
    - We'd be in for another year of blending in new players
    - Right now, halfway through a season of blending in new players, we're anything but settled with the existing guys
    - Doing it over again isn't gonna make things click any faster.

So in this pessimistic mood of mine, we're unlikely to do squat in 25/26 and again unlikely to do squat in 26/27.

What am I missing guys? I'm seeing no light at the end of tunnel that keeps getting longer. Help me out here?

In the "for what its worth" file I read this today.

A new report has now claimed that Guehi held talks with Liverpool, who refused to guarantee him that Slot will stay on as the manager of the defending Premier League champions next season.

According to an account on X run by a team of five elite reporters with over 700,000 followers, ‘They can’t plan without knowing who 100% the #LFC manager is next season.’

The account added at 2:06pm on January 16: “Exclusive Marc Guehi asked @LFC if Arne Slot would be the manager next season. “No comment”

The same thing has crossed my mind earlier in the week when I read that Liverpool will not be active in the window . Made me wonder whether a new manager will arrive in the summer and the decisions will be made on transfers then.

Well, sounds like we're shutting down this season, and likely starting over next fall without CL.

    Whoopie.

There are centre-backs better suited to Liverpool’s demands, quicker across the ground, stronger in recovery, and more aggressive in space. Those options still exist, if the club choose to act like they exist.

like who ffs - that can step into our starting lineup?

I would be more than a bit upset if I was CP. They almost sold Guehi a few months ago for double what they are getting now ..... until Glasner threw his toys out of the pram. The same Glasner who now says he made the decision to leave CP in Oct (which is very soon after the aforementioned toys were tossed). And if he admits to Oct you can bet a fistful of virtual dollars it was sometime earlier. Call me a cynic, but I say the toys went airborne because Glasner wanted Guehi to make him look good for a few more months to ensure his next job was a step up from CP. Yes, I would be most p-o'd if I were a CP supporter.

Let's also remember we need to find domestic players. We already have a smaller PL squad than normal since we don't have enough homegrown squad members, and things are even worse regarding the CL squad rules...
