They fell behind against then heavily-favored England, and battled back for a hard-fought 1-1 draw, even if they were a little lucky on the goal- The result was deserved. Our history suggested that when we concede goals early in The World Cup, that we would not get a favorable result. They dug themselves a two-goal hole against Slovenia, really needing a win and then fought back with a very inspired performance in the second half earning a draw, in what should have been a win if not for a poor call. Few teams had ever come back from 2-0 down in the history of The World Cup. They fought bravely for 90 minutes against Algeria and even overcame another poor goal disallowance to snatch the points and the group miraculously in stoppage time. When we entered stoppage time after going 90 minutes scoreless but needing a goal, our all-time history in 3rd group matches and even the odds suggested that we were headed out of The World Cup.. again. ... And then destiny reared it's head and manifested itself in the form of Landon Donovan; A player who for 90 minutes seemed mostly to be missing from the most crucial match of his life thus far. When there were key free kicks to be taken Donovan seemed hesitant- almost as if he may have been ultimately afraid of failure. For 90 minutes we were dragged through an agony of mud that seemed to stretch for a lifetime.. But then Donovan got his moment to shine and in a sheer moment of ecstasy, the World Cup was back on for United States. Ghana are a beatable side for us (no team should be taken lightly- We can't get caught unprepared or looking ahead to the quarterfinals) and we have a shot to exorcise our demons against the side that eliminated us last time out. Miraculously, our potential path to the semifinals(!) of THE WORLD CUP is strewn with three sides that are ranked below us, of which we will need to best only two of them. This team just could be on the greatest run of their lives; The greatest run of our lives; The greatest run in US Soccer's history. This could be our greatest World Cup Adventure yet... ... But we mustn't get ahead of ourselves. All we.. well really they need to do for now is beat Ghana; The team that FIFA ranks 32nd overall- and we'll likely have to do it with all of Africa rooting against us.. But we just might be a team of destiny here. Of course, we don't want the players believing that though. There is likely no Cinderella or fairy of destiny that will keep visiting us to bless us in our darkest moments. They will need to be prepared, focused and at their best to shine through this themselves. That is what will see them through. C'mon You Yanks. Just c'mon already.
It would be nice to see them go out and score a comfortable win against Ghana. I think The VOODOOZuelas have actually shot the African sides in the foot and taken away any home field advantage they may have otherwise had- And USA are certainly used to them with their biggest rivals being that of The Mexicans. Just this once I think they're do for a match when they come out, finish and spank the opposition. A team of Destiny? Perhaps, but I think it is because they've made their own destiny. Maybe for all our sakes though they can stop leaving the heroics for so late in the match. My ticker can't really take much more.
LMAO!!! HAHAHA!!! you are NOT gonna plagiarize one of my posts and try to expand/pass it off as your own ideas without getting exposed Location of Post: USA Men: News & Analysis Thread: USA vs Ghana (Round of 16) Pre-Game Thread Post #80 https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?p=21109996#post21109996 ================ BODY OF ORIGINAL POST: this entire world cup just feels like the tournament when the USMNT comes of age as a major team overcoming every single obstacle to make it out the group to meet the expectations of this year, and then moving straight on to face the team that took us out of the 2006 world cup (Ghana), exorcising the demons/failure of the past, so we can write a new future ================ this is SO hilarious someone would actually do that. i know Brooklyn is famous for robbing, but come on son!!! thanks for thinking so highly of what i wrote that it was worth taking, so of course no hard feelings. but NEXT time, give me a citation, preferably in APA format, otherwise face expulsion from USMNT University! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would consider this a team of destiny only if they end up winning the entire tournament. They have definitely exceeded expectations by winning their group though.
Am I missing something? Where is the plagiarism? Other than a similar theme (that neither of you are the first to suggest) I don't see what you're so worked up about. And on the topic... I don't believe in "destiny", but things are lining up in our bracket to give us a decent chance to go deep in this WC. We are playing with great spirit and unity, it seems, but this team is certainly beatable. We've yet to play a team firing on all cylinders (but I also think we can still play better, too).
We have a good shot, but it will take a lot of hard work. Remember how we all thought we were going to plow through Slovenia and Algeria. No one is an easy mark at the World Cup. Even New Zealand went undefeated in their group.
They're only a team of destiny if the destiny happens Getting out of the group took alot of hard work it wasn't much destiny. Yet to be determined what happens from here on out.
i know it sounds super cheesey but I felt there was a bigger plan here for us after Dempsey's goal vs. England.
From one ardent, passionate and loyal USMNT Fan to another I swear on the fate of this team's 2010 run that I never even read that post of yours. I'm glad that someone else on the thread came to my defense before I could speak for myself, and I find it interesting that you must obviously think that the usage of the phrase "exorcising of demons" is so rare that only you could have possibly thought to apply it here. Go figure. I will at least give you credit for bumping my thread back to the top of the board- Does that suffice?
Recalling the Miracle on Ice 30 years ago... The USA had to come from behind in every single game. I'm just sayin'
Oh yeah and by the way? I think you may have "borrowed" that "Write A New Future" bit from The Nike Commercials that everyone are seeing aired during just about every World Cup broadcast so far. I just thought it would be fair to point that out.
