Congratulations are in order to our 2013 Wooden Spoon Champions!

Congratulations to the 2013 DC United, OFFICIALLY the worst DC United team in the history of DC Uniteds. They still (!) need one point to avoid becoming the worst team in the history of MLS.

Own Goal continues to hold the team lead in scoring. But I'm not convinced that he's the team MVP. Surely that has to go to the only player on the team that's continued to stand tall throughout this wretched season, the only defender who's stopped everything the other team threw at him, who's never let anything past him...Goal Net.

DC needs to win 2 out of their last 3 to avoid having more wins in the Open Cup than in the league.

I didn't realize that I'd somehow gotten suckered into doing a weekly Sad Stats post since OWFSS stopped doing it.

It appears Jared Jeffrey is the only inactive player on the roster. Are Pajoy and Ruiz even with the team anymore?

Ruiz is collecting a paycheck while he packs for his move. Pajoy played recently in the game before the USOC.

I had completely forgotten about that late appearance. When do we get to see Alam unleashed?

I believe winning the USOC disqualifies the 2013 edition of DCU from any of the "worst" lists. You cannot win a championship (on the road no less) and be considered a "worst" of all time team. That is the delicious irony of this season, even if DCU doesn't get another point, they will have won one of the three "championships" MLS teams can aspire to: MLS Cup, Supporters' Shield and USOC.

Which makes us the "worst best team" ever or the "best worst team" ever. The mind-bending other clubs will need to do to discuss this is delicious, ESPECIALLY metro after they durr from MPF in the playoffs.

I am happy United won the Open Cup. That said, lets not gloss over the fact that most teams in MLS view this competition as an aside and field their reserves until the semi finals, if not the finals.

United had nothing left to fight for in the MLS regular season so not only did we use our startes almost the entire competition (with the exception of Willis) we actually sat our best players out of MLS regular season matches and rested them up for the cups games (something certainly none of our opponens did).

So while we won the cup, lets not fool ourselves into a false level of analyis of this DC United team. They are clearly the worst United team in history (yes worse than any of our non-trophy years) and are fighting to not be the worst team of all time in MLS.

Actually Kreis sat his regulars in Vancouver before the Cup final. It doesn't matter the circumstances surrounding a win, all that ever counts and is remembered is who won and who lost.

....and CONCACAF Champions League ..... guess can argue MLS teams don't aspire to win this, or perhaps more because can't seem to lately.

Unless United finds some way to get at least three points out of Houston this Sunday, we will offically be the worst team in MLS history. What are your thoughts on that. Right now the worst team ever is the 2001 Tampa Bay Mutiny with a record of 4-21-2.

There's already several threads dissecting this in this forum; why did we need another?

BTW, in those threads, it was shown that there's a worse team, "officially."

Terrible misinformation. In fairness, he's not the only person who's saying such bullpucky. The boys on MLSSoccer have claimed it a few times too. But that doesn't make it any less wrong.

Best worst team ever, until we finish the season with 3 wins.

So if this is "Terrible misinformation" and you are saying everyone is wrong, why don't you provide the correct information!

As I see it there are two teams tied for the worst record as of right now, the 2001 Tampa Bay Munity and 2005 Chivas USA. Both with only 4 wins. Until we get a fourth win we will be the worst team in Major League Soccer.

Winning the least amount of games then any other team in Major League Soccer history is what qualifies them as the worst team in the history of Major League Soccer. That being said, what about the fact we have more "own goals" then wins this season. That in itself is a deplorable fact, that I wish could be erased from the record books. Winning the USOC is like putting a cherry on top of a pile of dog crap and calling it a sundae. Put the blinders on my friend if you want to by saying we won the USOC and by doing so it makes one of the worst seasons ever irrelivant.

Just because you can't be arsed to look 15 posts above yours doesn't mean the information isn't widely available.

    For god's sakes, scroll up.

That's fine, you can see it that way. But you used the expression "officially," and your views do not make anything official.

Here's the updated version of that chart.

Official records on the left, unofficial records on the right.

Am I the only one that does not understand that chart?

Least wins and most losses says to me this is the worst team ever. I understand the points per game thing is being used to parse some wins and losses that were shootout oriented, but I don't really care about that. Most losses were NY in '99 with 25, but they really "tied" some of those losses, and they "won" 7 but I believe some of them were shootouts too.

Can't compare apples and oranges. Scrap the early shootout years. Compare records since then. Least wins 3, maybe 4 if lucky but still least ever (tied with TB), and most losses undisputed in the post shootout era.

And it really should be worst record ever, not worst team. This DC team this year would not be bottom of the table in 99 or 2001 or 2005, maybe not even in 2010. You put this team against in those years, and they easily beat some of the dreck this league used to produce. In my humble opinion of course. :D
