a little help needed here my english friends!

    http://www.football365.com/All_News/News_Features/story_63956.shtml

an excerpt from the above link (F365's EPL worst XI of the season)

    Forward: Peter Crouch
What's this? A great big centre forward signed for an over-inflated fee, who couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo?

now we can certainly discuss the merits of this XI also, but is the phrase in bold some sort of famous saying in england?!? would anyone want to smack a cow's behind with a musical instrument?!?! especially a banjo (which id imagine might take it out of tune) - in america, we like to say so and so couldnt hit the ocean standing on the beach - please let me know if i should prefer this most descriptive alternative
