I read somewhere--The Pitch--that it's a very real possibility they will. I'd love to see a Dallas/LA Real Madrid/Juventus doubleheader.... anyone heard anything about this?
Would they be willing to play on fake grass at Texas Stadium? Would Texas Stadium put in a real grass overlay for them? If both of these answers are no then there is no place for them to play here. I don't see the Cotton Bowl as being high tone enough for them and the new Burn Stadium, even when complete (2005) would not be large enough. Someday JerryWorld may be a good spot for these type of games.
I read your thread & went back & looked at "The Pitch." On page 10 of the 11/03 edition in an article written by Mauricio Guevara he states: "Real Madrid, probably the most powerful team at the moment, with a roster that includes such players as Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo and its most recent acquistion, David Beckham, already has plans to include Dallas as part of its tour of the United States next year." No potential opponents, venues, or sources mentioned in article.
That's the article! I'd like to know who he got that from. I emailed Steve Davis (DMN) about it, maybe he's heard something. My dream scenario: A mini-tournament w/ Real, ManU, and Chicago.
Weren't all the teams that played United Nike teams? If so then Real will probably play Adidas teams. Maybe AC Milan, Newcastle etc.
As long as they think they can get away with charging an arm & a leg for tickets, I don't see why Real Madrid would be against playing at the Cotton Bowl. After all, World Cup matches were played there in the not so distant past. And while the stadium is certainly not in the best shape, I'd expect that Madrid is used to playing in similar past-their-prime stadiums in La Liga and the Champion's League.
United played Celtic in Seattle. They are an Umbro team. Also during the United Tour, Milan played Juventus & Barcelona. So I don't know that it really matters.
ChampionsWorld had Man U playing at the LA Colisseum (a real craphole), so I don't see why the Cotton Bowl wouldn't be good enough for Real Madrid.
