marseille is still the most popular due to its victory in the champions league in 1993... so that whole young generation who saw that still have marseille in their heart because that team was amazing... now, l'ol is by far the best team in france and biggest when talking about finances, MUCH BIGGER... lyon's budget is probably almost double marseille's now... psg is either the 2nd or 3rd most popular club and will (my theory) get bigger in the years to come... in the next decade it will be bigger just because its paris and had a huge fan fase... so after lyon, i say PSG takes over... but that could be a LONG while... also, don't forget that saint-etienne is still in many french people's hearts due to how they played in the 70's and 80's... les verts is still a VERY popular club in france
i remember watching a ligue 1 match and the commentators mentioned that OL has overtaken OM as the most popular club in france by a slight margin
Depends where you are at in France.... Anyone who lives in the "midi" is an OM supporter. Lyon is starting to build its own base, but I think Lyon does better in Paris than Marseille. So long as Anigo is at the club, Marseille will soon be overtaken by FC Perpette la Gallette in popularity.
Midi, is the midieval term that reffers to southern France. There are several geographic features (canal du Midi, Pic du Midi, etc...) that contribute to this appelation. L'accent du Midi refers to the Southern accent in France. As for titles, I think it's OM with 8 that leads the way, but again, I could be wrong here......
The professional league appeared in 1932, and the club that has got the greatest number of titles is St-Etienne (10 titles, which is very few compared to other championships).
good, thats what makes the french championnat so much better than other leagues... seeing the same team win isn't fun after a while (even if i'm at awe with lyon, they are really amazing and could win the CL)... Reims back 50 years ago, saint-etienne in the 70's and 80's, marseille in the 90's, and lyon now are basically the dynasties... waiting for paris to gon that list
Iirc, the only other 'professional' football teams before that came from the cycling and general athletic organisations. But given the spate of occupation during World War II when the country was litteraly split into two it only really got going post war.
serb, soccer is real popular in france... but it depends on the regions as well, probably just like in all countries... for example, rugby is REAL popular (not sure if its more popular) in the southwest of france... in the basque country, in toulouse (best team in europe), to the mediteranean coast - thats rugby country... otherwise, i'd say marseille is also special... marseille lives for their team... and for me its not easy to say that because im a psg fan, but in paris you don't have the same thing... paris is a big city so you have A LOT of great fans... but proportionally, i'd say marseille is big... then you take saint-etienne who are an exception... people go freaking crazy for les verts... they would fill their stadium over 30,000 during some of their league 2 games!!!! another team/city have a lot of respect for is Lens... their stadium holds about 39,000, which is MORE THAN THE POPULATION OF LENS!!! AND THEIR STADIUM IS PRACTICALLY FILLED EVERY GAME!!!! you see, i find that amazing... and sadly enough, the parc des princes in paris, which holds 48,500 on avg only has about 42,000 at the games... so its jsut not the same philosophy everywhere... hope that helps
Their first was in 1957 and their last was in 1981. And from 67-70, they won four in a row, which is the record for consecutive titles, although Lyon are looking to break it this year. http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/HIST_D1.html If you look at who's won the titles, and when they won them, there's an obvious ebb and flow. It's a small group of teams who are typically near the top, and they just seem to trade off for dominance of the Championnat.
...there was a public poll, whose results showed that Lyon (!) is most popular club now. BUT most popular among housewives (! ) is Marseille. PSG, Nantes, Auxerre and St. Etienne are not very far
Marseille still get massive attendence and backing despite no trophies in over a decade. Still they have remained competitve and have made two Uefa cup finals in the last six years. Lyon have a better team at the moment but I think we are still the bigger club. They must prove that they can rebuild their team when the core players from the start of their success move on, it takes a few generations of strong teams to equal a big club.
You start with Super Frank Ribery and build around him.... The youth system has had some success the past couple of years, Flamini, Nasri, these guys aren't chopped liver. If the acadamy can produce players like that then bonus, the rest is just poaching players from L2 or lesser L1 squads without being stupid. The latter has been the problem the last 5 years.
