i will go out on a limb and say that donovan will be an immediate and consistent starter because he plays the bayer style and he can do it in 2 or 3 positions with no dropoff

 

ITs official he should immidiately make an impact on your clubs struggles. Is he eligible for current champions League play? or do we have 2 wait till jan 1?

 

It's now up to Bayer to beat Kiev next month so we can all see LD shine in the Champions League.

 

He can start training now but he isn't eligible for games until the transfer window opens again Jan. 1.

I can't believe Leverkusen still have Donovan under contract. He signed when he was 16 and the club has owned him ever since. Do you guys know if he signed a new contract at some point, or did he sign some kind of lifetime contract when he was 16? When is his contract up?

 

It wasn't the coach that discovered him it was the GM.

 

What's Ponte's position? Creative mid?

 

i think when MLS after 2002 season asked to have him for 2 more years (on loan), he probably extended his entire contract 2 years. not 100% sure.

 

Leverkusen have consistently played 3-5-2 this season.

With this formation Ponte's position is the only place Donovan can play as Krzynowek and Berbatov will definately not get dropped. If Voronin's form dips Franca will take back that position.

I think it's absurd that some of you people think Donovan will immediately have a place in the team.

You do realise too that the GM who "discovered" Donovan is no longer with the club right.

 

Similarly, I don't know why you should find it absurd. He is obviously a player that Bayer wanted, or else why all the fuss to bring him back to Germany? Look, I'm not a "fanboy," but it's pretty plain to those who viewed WC02 that Donovan can play the game at a fairly high level. He has speed, technical ability, work rate, tactical sense and vision. He has played decently at forward, attacking midfield and right midfield. It is not out of the question that, given a few week's training with the club between now and when the winter transfer period opens, he can find a place in the first XI for Bayer. If you're a Bayer supporter, that's nothing but a good thing, in my view.

 

Donovan will not be repoprting to Bayer until January 3rd.

Hey three blocks, don't sweat worrying abvout Donovan cracking your lineup. He'll do it quickly, and you will NEVER regret it, whoever he knocks out of the lineup.

 

Hmmm maybe because they own him and it's time to play after being on an extended holiday. Bayer is a very average club in Germany, they can't afford big name players. They rely on older players, second division and youth, so obviously with their limited budget they need to add new players.

Just because he played relatively well for a few games in an already poor tournament does not equate being some kind of world super star. The plan is to have Donovan rot on the bench for the next two years, playing reserve matches now and then. He will be useless to the US in WC'06 --assuming we make it out of the Hex, with a depressed and out of form Donovan losing the captain's armband to Pablo.

i would say LD would have a chance to grab ponte's spot, but injuries happen during a long crowded season and as i said he can play 2 or 3 other spots without dropoff

and yes, he is CL/uefa cup eligible

The general consensus from Bayer fans is they either don't know who Donovan is or think its about time he returns.
My room mate in particular who is a Leverkusen season ticket fanatic is not particularly excited he is returning till he proves himself and not run home because the weather is different from San Jose.

 

I guarantee everyone on this thread that if Donavan begins to start matches and immediately makes an impact, this guy will not post anything else ever again regarding LD. I urge everyone to remember this post so we can make this guy eat his words.

Oh, and for what it's worth, I've been surfing the Leverkusen boards over there and I find that several posters have put Landon in the starting lineup. Seems they're wanting him to replace Ponte. Granted they're just fans (like me and you), but they don't find it absurd at all - and they're there watching their team live and in person.
