This will be a real test of their metal. The remaining fixture list is brutal including games (league) against Arsenal and Chelsea. There are also fixtures against Spurs, Charlton, Villa, Pool, B'ham. Easier fixtures against B'Burn, Pompey, and L.Foxes. You have a 15 point cushion, on the 4th place spot, with 30 points to play for. 7 of your 10 matches are against the top 7 clubs in the table. I don't see Birmingham make a real charge. But Liverpool and Newcastle and Charlton are all on 42 ( I believe ) and might have a go at them. They would each need about 24 points from 30 scare you, which is a lot to ask. I would think United would need only about 10 of these 30 points in the stretch to stay in 3rd or 4th place, but you never know. Thoughts?
The difficulty of our remaining schedule does not make that much of a difference. It's all about confidence, form, and a bit of luck. If we put two good games in a row, we could catch Chelski easily... If we have another bad game on Saturday, then we could end up 4th or 5th. I don't see us dropping to 4th or 5th, personally. So, possible? Yes, but not likely.

Incidentially, it is totally possible United could catch Arsenal, be tough, 9 is a lot. Last year was never really more than 5 full, as the 8 had MU with a game in hand. I just thought, with the sky falling and all around here, what people's thought about this situation where.

We could easily continue the terrible form we are in. However the streak of terrible matches must end somewhere, maybe luck is on our side this time, cuz it sure as hell has not been for awhile... We need a bit of luck with the team we will be fielding..
4th is plausible. 5th really isn't. Charlton doesn't have enough quality to put together that sort of a run. I have trouble believing that Newcastle and Liverpool will both suddenly have substantially better form than either has had in ages... while United simultaneously fail to improve at all. Statistically possible, but ridiculously unlikely. However, the team that is being fielded is pitiful. The only player on the pitch tomorrow in good form is Paul Scholes. Even RVN has been crap, lately. We'll see this summer if SAF realizes just how far his team has fallen, and if the board open up the checkbook enough to fix it. But right now, talk of 5th is downright silly.
i think if we improve we will finish 2nd. if we keep playing like in the last games 3rd. but no way that we finish 4th or even 5th.
Man Utd. possibly finishing 5th Ladies and Gentlemen, I am not a Man Utd fan by any stretch of the imagination, but let us be serious Man Utd finish 5th. Sir AF would commit hari-kari, if that occurred, and seriously they have a bit more talent than to free fall that far. Man Utd need to become as their name says UNITED, all teams go through a dip in form Man Utd are no different. Comparing any team in any league to Arsenal is ludicrious, they are hitting on all cylinders and they look as if they COULD keep it going all year. I feel Man Utd will challenge Chelsea for second and all will watch Arsenal produce one of the best seasons in the history of European Football.

But their players really aren't as good as how that team is playing as a whole. Chemistry is one thing - but why are they so much better than last year? Of course, it gives one hope that they won't be able to repeat this kind of play next year. But if they do... Wenger is the greatest talent evaluator to ever live.
Re: Re: Man Utd. possibly finishing 5th We are nearly as good. The main difference is that we have had no major injuries (knock on wood) and , you are just not on form. Last year we played a big part of the year without Vieira, Ljunberg, and Campbell. Take them out this year, where are we.
Re: Man Utd. possibly finishing 5th I'm not sure how much I agree with this. I don't think Llungberg has been all that influential for you guys. I always thought he was overrated - and I think he's half the player now that he was a couple of years ago. I see weaknesses in Arsenal - but they just don't seem to matter. Cygan is seriously slow. Ashley Cole is improved defensively, but still commits too far up and makes defensive mistakes. Toure has been good, but hardly world class. Teams just don't seem to score against Arsenal as much as they should. Part of that, of course, is that Vieira's an exceptional holding midfielder. Another part is that Arsenal play such an excellent attacking game, hold possession, and force the other team into a shell. But with only truly elite defender (despite Toure's good play), you'd think you guys would get hit on the break much, much, much more than you actually do.
