Is DC United going to be the best MLS club of the 2007 season or is it the best MLS club ever?

Yeah, I don't even see how it comes close, unless you are super-biased and... Ahhh wait a sec, I get where you are coming from now.

C'mon, DC United has more MLS Cups than LA, more international trophies than LA, and more Supporter Shields... The only Trophy LA has more of than DC is the all-important Open Cup...

Seriously, although LA is easily the second best MLS team, they ARE second best to DC United.

 

DC is best by far. Someone close this.

Problem with this question is it need to be answered by fans other than those of DC United.

As a fan of newly created TFC, I would say that DC are the storied club in the leagues young history, but that could change and fast.

As for this year, the league parity will play a big part as DC learned yesterday. The quality of MLS is reaching a new plane. Very much enjoyed the concacaf games and although the Mexican teams were better, there wasn't all that much in it. Its always a considerable advantage to be away first unless you cave.

I agree with your opinion (regarding the bulk of responses being DC fans), but it is tough to argue their merits. Parity does seem to be a good possibility this year, especially with the player movements and acquisitions that have occurred in the offseason. However, it cannot be argued that DC is the best team in MLS history thus far, and they seemed poised to remain highly competitive in the "next phase" of MLS.

 

I blame this thread for our current record.

How one season makes a huge difference then again that playoff game showed every little problem with DC.

I hate to disagree but when comparing trophies won DC United are the clear front runners in MLS. I hate to say that as I am a Chicago Fire fan. LA is a glamor spot for any sport but the Galaxy can't compare with the United at this point. Actually I believe my Fire have more trophies than the Galaxy, don't they?

 

I couldn't resist interjecting fact into this speculative thread, but factually, if you only care about hardware, (MLS cup wins, US Open Cups, Supporter's Shields, Concacaf Championships). You get DC 9, LA 7, Chicago 6, San Jose 3. If you include things like overall regular season records, runner-up finishes, etc. then the numbers change.

Anyway, none of this is relevant to this thread, as I believe the idea was that DC United team of 2007 is going to be the best MLS club of all time - meaning this year's team better than any team from any other year or single season. Perhaps we should wait a few games before we revisit this idea (As BBBulldog pointed out on page 1).

 

We're still ahead of Toronto. At least on goal differential.

 

Quite comfortable in saying DC United is extremely overrated this season and RBNY with the addition of Angel will take the east.

 

they may not be the best ever, but they sure are my favorite of the DCU teams

 

i love it when jersey has a decent start to the season.
they get all giddy, pull their britches up and go on and on as if their club has ever won a trophy. it just makes it all the sweeter come season's end, when their injury ravaged squad is propping up the rest of the table, and DC having made the few adjustments they needed early on, have gone on to crush the rest of the league.

I'm guessing that if you take all of the championship trophies from MLS, college, international play, and overseas leagues that NY players and coaches have individually been a part of, and all the championship trophies that DC players and coaches have individually been a part of, added up the first set, and added up the second set, then NY would have more trophies than DC. Unless you're so deluded after 11 seasons of MLS in believing that the DC shirt has magical powers, or that there's something in NY (despite a 100% overhaul in management) that precludes the possibility of success (the New Jersey water, maybe??) then you would realize that (1) the foundations for the success of the first three games were there despite preconceptions about how Arena was no good anymore, the players were old, etc., and (2) NY's chances of winning trophies this season and in the immediate future are substanitally greater than DC's chances.

Hell, I can't believe *I* was so blind about it-- I think I bought into the idea that Arena had lost his touch. How wrong I was.

 

Of course. NY gets our players after they're done winning trophies while DC brings in new blood.

Too bad you can't brushoff that 0-3 start. Sorry DC fans but you can't hide behind your trophies this year. 2 of your losses have come against non-playoff teams from last year,,,not looking good pal.

 

Look, I didn't say it because I support NY, I said it because the idea that they are just a bunch of losers because they wear that shirt is asinine, even if it is supposed to be funny. And I don't think it's necessarily meant to be funny, because there WAS a miasma of loserness about the organization. It's gone now. These guys are used to winning, even if the fans aren't used to watching winning soccer. What makes anyone think the players and coaches are suddenly going to forget how to win?

Q: If you had to choose one, would you rather have DC's past (great support and a full trophy case) or NY's future (a very impressive-looking team, a monster youth system, a stadium that is actually going to happen)? Because the DC team and coaching and stadium situation looks like a looming disaster to me.
