Berlin may be set on fire soon as well. Lots of Anarchists there... http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/0,1518,595033,00.html
[sarcasm] Yea, but what the hell is "bunning?" Does this mean Athens is being surrounded by pieces of bread? [/sarcasm]
So will anything ultimately happen (coup, opposition leader is being an opportunist and calling for early elections) or just a bunch of riots that will flame out after a week? The Prime Minister and Interior Minister have said they'll step up their actions to confront the rioters. The military is staying out of it. Has the EU said anything? Greece is an EU member. I imagine this is one internal squabble they wouldn't want to touch with a ten-foot pole.
Re: Is Athens Bunning? There is a labor strike planned in parts of Greece for tomorrow (well, it is the early morning hours of 'tomorrow' in Greece as I'm posting this) that was organized before the rioting began. The gov't has asked the trade union to halt the strike as they fear it will escalate the rioting. The unions said they'll proceed with the strike as planned. It'll be interesting to see what happens Wednesday. It's been kind of odd watching this, because I was in a few of these cities just 4-5 months ago and have seen places on TV and in photos where I visited/stayed/ate. Certainly makes you pay more attention when you've walked some of those streets.
An English-language Greek newspaper here. http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_columns_1_10/12/2008_102904 This year strikes me as the return of history.
What a nonsense! Well, the EU surely isn't amused ... but it's the task of the Greek government & parliament to deal with the riots. Somehow, there must be something going the wrong way in the country if the police can't protect the citizens & owners of shops in the Old Town of Athens... The death of the 15 year old guy (shot by a dubiuos policeman) surely was the reason for the current riots, but it seems that a larger part of the Greek society is joining the protest against the current Conservative government.
No, no need for the Persians. The Greeks are going to burn Athens down by themselves. What an intelligent way to express dissent.
is greece a preview of what will happen around the world? anyways.....the situation that is happening in Greece, it is clearly an unfortunate event. I have a feeling that some countries are going to take advantage of it and invade it.
Damn. I didn't realize that unemployment among the 18-25 age group in Greece has been above 25% for years.
Xerxes has never been admired in our history books. Even him, at that time in human history, realized the wrong he had done and immediately ordered the rebuilding of the city with all expenses paid for. The only thing we can find close to it doesn't show up in history till the 20th century with the Marshall Plan.I think that speaks a volume.
Ah the left, they do enjoy mindlessly destroying their own cities. Pee brained simpletons. Unfortunetly this moronic behaviour has spread to other parts of Europe; anarcho scum here burned the Greek flag, marches of hippie students "protesting" against they don't know what. How they think this will improve the conditions of the economic crisis, rather than making it worse by the taxpaers having to foot the bill for their destruction, is beyond me. Send in the army to put it down. Where is Ioannis Metaxas?
