So, is it? Are we ready? Do we feel good about the season?

i'm always optimistic at the start of the season, but it hasn't lasted very long for the last couple of years.
The year we had to play our first 8 games or so on the road cause the HDC wasn't quite ready... and lost them all... that was a killer.
my optimism was pretty much gone after that.
And our last couple of starts haven't been much better. i was disappointed at the start of last year... we won the US open cup game against NY and I thought.. we're doing OK, but things just went south quick and lost it.

i'm optimistic again right now, but if we dump the first 5-6 or so, it'll be more of the same.

and just to vent...I hate how long our offseason is... in england they end up in what? end of may or june? and they start up again by august.... 2 and a half months off or something like that...
italy is longer, 3 months [if they bother to start on time..]
but we are off from november and don't start till end of march or beginning of april... 5 months.

Not to get off topic too much, but why are their off seasons shorter? They have more games? Or the games are spread out more? I dont closely follow Serie A or EPL too closely (sorry).

I for one am excited to this season. We got Becks right out of the gate which we didnt have last year. Weve got players who are now focusing on soccer and not the 'Beckham Experience'. We've got a manager who is a step up from Frankie Boy. We've dropped some dead weight players. I still hope for one or two more acquisitions to get ready for the season.

Every year is our ********ing year! I will not give up a single season to those a$$holes from Chivas Lite, San Jose, or even those arrogant pricks from DC. We were the original MLS Super Club. We dominated this league for the nearly a decade. We have the best American player in the league, we have the best foreign player in the league. We have the best stadium and the best fans. You can argue which rivalry is best in the league, us v. DC, us v. Chivas, us v. the Smurfs, but it all boils down to us. Sure Alexi is a putz, but he wouldn't even be a topic if he wasn't with the Galaxy. We blow out coaches like candles, even the winners (just ask Zambrano or Sigi). We act like championships are our divine right, because they are! This is LA. Its title town. Nothing less is acceptable.

Now do I feel like we can do it this year? Of course, but I'm a whole more confident than I was when the great Satan was here. I feel a whole lot better than when Alexi was bringing every Tom, Dick and Harry regardless of what his head coach wanted. I feel a whole better knowing DB is healthy, Landon is still here, Ruiz is back and Ruud is in charge.

Do I feel confident that we can win a title with our current roster? Hell no! But I also don't think we are done yet, and frankly I'm never happy with our roster as is. I'm always going to want better players, more players, more prospects, etc. I love that every a-hole out of contract in Europe this summer will be linked to us come June. That's the way it should be. There was only one club David Beckham was ever coming to in MLS and rightly so for all the myriad of reasons discussed ad nauseum on these boards.

Is this our year you ask? Every year is our year! We're the LA Galaxy.

I am the eternal optimist which makes me a glutton for pain and punishment. I am going in just like I did last season, thinking that this year is going to be the year.

On a side note ... watching that video with the replay of Klien's goal against Dallas gives me shivers. That was one sick shot ... hopefully we see a lot more of that this year.

with a healthy roster going into the season and Babayaro on his way, this could be the best season in years.

on a side note i can be seen in the video, just look for the group of gold after pavons second goal in NY

not sure in the EPL, but in serie A there are 20 teams, each plays all other teams once at home, once away and basically one game per week, but occasionally weekday games too ... so 19 teams twice: 38 league games.
they have a 2-3 week winter break right around christmas, which makes the season 40 or so weeks...

MLS plays what? 30 games? that would drop 2 and half months of the season right there.
i suppose our season will lengthen as we get more teams. at least i hope it does

The EPL is almost the same: 20 teams, one home and one away, 38 league games. No Christmas break however, in fact the schedule usually increases to two matches per week during this period. There are numerous "breaks" during the season for international fixtures and cup competitions (FA Cup and Carling Cup), something MLS still hasn't figured out yet.

The EPL season begins in mid August and ends in mid May, so they have a three-month break (and no conflicts when there's a World Cup, are you listening MLS??).

Yeah, it's the international and cup breaks that help to make the season longer.

I don't think MLS should end any later--it ends way to late as it is, competing with the NFL and the baseball postseason. I guess they don't want to start too much earlier because of weather, but really--say the season started in early March, even by chance if there was snow in some places, a snow game on TV could only get people talking. Break out the orange ball!

We are going to blow defenses to bits with our devastating attack. It will mark the end of a free MLS and the rise of the Galactic Empire

Oh Crap! Unless... the management hasn't learned from the mistakes of last year, in which case those evil Ewoks might destroy our plans before we even start

then we might self destruct like we did last year

    and the offseason rolls on...

I have a feeling this will be the year for us b/c we have learned from our mistake in 2007.We have a new coach,a new system.Ruiz will do very well for us.
We will get back @ (I wish they move) Chivas and step on San Josephine.

We are a very good FC and we will bring the cup to LA......:)

Maybe only slightly off topic, but how many people are they expecting for opening day against the smurfs? Can we sell it out, or is it just gonna be the lower bowl again?

Huh? Since when has there only been the lower bowl for any home opener? Since when have we not sold out (on paper) a home opener at the HDC? How many games do you go to?

Its the fricking Smurfs! Hell, we might have 40,000 show up, which I think was Chivas Lite's attendance for the first two months last year. I expect Drew Cary, Tom Cruise and at least two presidential candidates.

Bringing this back on topic, yes, 2008 is our year.

    Yes, 2008 is our year.

    Why?

Because for the past two years, while we HAVEN'T been making the playoffs, I've had the same Avatar.

So, now, in honor of 2008, the year we MAKE the playoffs, I'm rockin' a new HOG.

I think it's going to make a difference....

    :)

Not to go off-topic here, but TrickHog, your new avatar is freakin' scary man. That thing can give people seizures if they stare at it too long (Chivas fans go right on ahead :D).

Well now that the schedule is out, we know we have 9 points up on the board already.

    3 points from 4/3
    3 points from 6/14 and
    3 points from 8/3

Last season it took 40 points to make the playoffs... so now we only need to come up with 31 more.

Thanks for the free points smurfs.
