Iranian Green Movement: Fresh protests today The "West" are already being accused of formenting the violence: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/wor...st_of_fomenting_violent_protests_in_iran.html In the video, it sound like the crowd is chanting "Libertad"!
Re: Iranian Green Movement: Fresh protests today I know, The US and Israel are easy bogeymen for the facists in power in iran.
A good article from the Economist on the Iranian situation: http://www.economist.com/world/midd...fm?story_id=15172247&source=features_box_main I'm curious how those inside or with contacts inside Iran think this is going to play out? Given the current mood, how much longer will the hard-liners be able to hold out? How far would they go? Tienanmen Square far? How does this end and who takes over when it does?
Based on what we have heard from members of the Govt. I expect a harsh crackdown to begin at any time. Harsher then Tienanmen Square. I just hope that when it comes the people are ready for it and prepared to fight back. I wonder how well armed they are?
Given that they'll get blamed for it anyway, the US may as well provide assistance as best they can. A democratic Iran completely changes the regional political landscape from Israel to Pakistan.
That is kinda how I feel as well, but I don't want any of our troops to go into Iran, I don't think that will help any.
Iranian Green Movement: Fresh protests today It's a scary thought. The hardline propaganda suggests that the regime supporters believe that the protestors are not just against the government, but against the "Islamic Revolution" as well, therefore traitors to their religion. It could be a bloodbath, especially if they view their struggle as one "to the death". OTOH, the Soviet Union collapsed with far less bloodshed than we saw during its existence. I doubt that the people are either prepared to fight a civil war or are well armed. The question is whether the army & police will fight against their own people. I think the Basiji are already angry enough to be ruthless towards the protestors, but question how long the uniformed forces would battle who could in many cases be their own families. After all, even if the government falls, there will be a new government with a police force & an army. The Basiji have much more to lose, as they would probably be dissolved & no longer benefit from businesses they control, as well as face the displeasure of most Iranians. I disagree. The last thing any nation outside Iran needs to do is to interfere with this internal problem. There is no assistance we can provide until these events play out. Even afterwards, only material assistance should be provided, upon request.
There is nothing the outside world can do as far as material support goes at this point. It all comes down to who controls the army. The Basiji obviously are supporting the regime, but militarily they wouldn't be very effective. At this point, three things could happen. 1. The army could do nothing, or even support the Basiji against the protestors. If this happens, the regime stands. 2. The army could side with the protestors. If that happens, the regime is done. Most will attempt to escape to parts of the former Soviet Union, in all likelihood. Could get ugly for any that stay. 3. The army could split and civil war erupts. Only in case #3 could outside support mean anything, and it's by far the least likely of the scenarios. My money is still on #1, but not nearly as much as it was 3 months ago. I am shocked that there hasn't been a major crackdown, and am beginning to suspect that the regime is not entirely confident that the army will stay on the sidelines if things get real ugly.
I think the reigme will hold on to power for the foseeable future. The IRG is in power and will do anything to remain in power. I would like to be wrong. Caution, the video shows a police vehicles hitting, then intentionally driving over a protester. US government agencies & Soros working together?
The latest news coming out of Iran says pro government animals armed with weapons shot at a vehicle carrying mehdi karubi who was leaving after visiting the family of one of the killed protesters in qazvin. Luckily it was an armoured vehicle so no one was hurt and karubi is in good spirit. The government doesn't realize killing mussavi or karubi would intensify the opposition even more & the regime would collapse immediately.
Iranian Green Movement: today http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/09/world/middleeast/09iran.html Amazaingly, parts of the attack were reported by a semi-official news site: "A series of pictures on the pro-government Raja news Web site showed Mr. Karroubi’s black car surrounded by an angry mob throwing rocks. The riot police are shown guarding the car and trying to keep the crowd away as demonstrators chant, “Our city is no place for a traitor,” ..." http://www.rajanews.com/detail.asp?id=42530 for English, google www.rajanews.com then click on "translate this page" & scroll down to & click on the story "was able with the help of anti-riot troops ... to escape"
Btw: Here's a great German/Persian song (with English translation) dedicated to Neda & all the other brave Iranians who are prepared to risk their lives for a better future. So a scientist who openly backed Mr. Mousavi in the election campaign, gets killed by a blast in Tehran ... and the Iranian dictatorship already knows who is to blame. Really interesting, isn't it? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100112/ap_on_re_mi_ea/ml_iran http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2010/01/20101121414688718.html
It's obvious the government has implemented a strategy to assassinate green supporter. It started when they assasinated mussavi's nephew and then they shot at karoubis vehicle and now this. Be prepared for more.
