"Embarrassment" is much too kind. Offensive, revolting, childish, pedophile, repulsive, misogynistic, stupid, repugnant, obscene, abhorrent are some of the other descriptors that readily come to mind.

There is some talk that this invasion and the actions in Venezuela and Cuba are motivated by “the Davidson Window”.

The US military community apparently believe that President Xi has given Chinese armed forces the task of being prepared to take over Taiwan militarily by no later than 2027. This doesn’t mean he has instructed them to invade by then, only that he has tasked them to have the military capability to take the island by then. 2027 is also the year Xi seeks a fourth term.

    https://www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpreter/china-taiwan-pla-s-2027-milestones

The Americans know they can’t fight China whilst dealing with another adversary, so they are going through their wish list of “jobs” to do before then, which explains the rush to go to war and/or invade Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, possibly Greenland etc.

I am not sure Trump can think that far ahead, but I do know that if he had that plan, then Iran represents a major speed bump.

I think his plan is still to “escalate to deescalate” - seize Kharg within a month, demand negotiations with the Iranians once he has done that and get the Iran mess off his desk before next year (actually his own timetable will likely be based on the midterms rather than 2027).

I don’t see that plan working though, the Iranians have split him from his erstwhile allies (actually Trump did that all by himself) and if he seizes or destroys Kharg, they will have no choice but to respond by blowing up all the other Middle Eastern energy production and processing sites linked to American companies. If they do that, whether Hormuz is open or closed becomes redundant because there is no oil to transport through there anymore.

The Iranians will get their terms (binding security guarantees, some form of reparations and/or sanctions relief) or the war will drag on.

israelis are now saying they have killed Ali Larijani. If correct, this is a major blow to the Iranians.

Has anyone else been mulling the insanity of an oil-based global economy during this latest cluster********?

Drilling it from great depths, often times within countries ruled by volatile and/or authoritarian regimes.
Pipe-lining or otherwise transporting it to tankers and/or storage.
Then finally downstream, refining to various strata of products and transporting these again to wherever they need to go.

If you started modern human civilization in a simulation, this would be an absolute shit option across the board. Besides the above mentioned complex supply chain with its built-in problems, the end result is a hugely inefficient energy source. We are talking 70% thermodynamic waste in relation to the energy that actually powers the moving parts of our machines and vehicles. That is before you get to the downstream environmental costs of it all.

It's the choice only an insane species would make, the same species that would elect Donald J. Trump twice to POTUS. So in that regard, it makes sense.

Any politician that runs on raising the top federal tax bracket for each state to the equivalent % that said state voted for Trump in order to pay for war reparations will have my support.

There is a also a related dumb idea out there, prevalent amongst the Vance/Musk/Rogan class, that you can tear down the global trading order, but somehow everything will keep working as before, only better.

As we saw on a small scale with Brexit, deciding to be agile traders who buccaneer the high seas isn't how anything works with complex supply chains and commerical systems which require rules and trust

Director of the US National Counterterrorism Center (a Trump appointee) has resigned, saying there was no imminent threat from Iran and that the war was only started due to israel and its lobby:

Trump also doubled down on him not being told that the Iranians might hit their bases in the gulf.

He explicitly said no one briefed him about the possibility, and that none of the experts knew.

Someone needs to get Hegseth in front of a microphone, and eventually a senate committee. The deaths of the seven(?) soldiers in Kuwait is going to be a big political problem for these guys.

Yeah, if anyone was going to resign I thought it would be mid to low level generals resigning over the Kuwait deaths (once major combat was over).

But director of national counterterrorism, whilst the war is active, was not on my bingo card.
