The first match takes place at El Madrigal. I know very very little about NK Maribor, only that they are 7 time champions of their league.

So....whose in the starting lineup, anyone else know of NK Maribor and what Villarreal need to do to gauruntee a win in the first leg?

    -----Barbosa------
    Javi Venta---Gonzalo---Pena---Arruabarrena
    Pires-----Senna----Riquelme----Sorin
    Forlan----Nihat

    subs:
    Viera
    Cani
    Silva
    Franco

Is Tacchinardi in camp yet? Wouldn't he at least be a sub? Also, is there any TV? I think I know the answer to that one, but I figured I'd put the question out there.

I haven't heard whetehr he is or not. I would guess also that tach would be on the subs list. Just was leaving room to grow sop to speak.

And no...no TV I am aware of. I will be at a DC match when this thing kicks off so I will have to see the result when I get home.

Still 0-0 in the 36th. Good save from the Maribor keeper a minute or two ago.

After a beautiful run by Cani that almost produced a goal for Villarreal, Maribor scores a minute later to make it 2-1. About 6 minutes plus stoppage time remain.

    ********!

All they need now is a draw at home and Villarreal are out of European competition. No Riquelme or Sorin. Nice to see Forlan score.

Villa needs to win by 2 next weekend.
    Here's hoping they do.

    Thanks for video. Pints.

Nihat did an assist to Forlan.

Maribor first goal was little bit unluck for the Villarreal golie..
The golie stay to much upfront ''I think'' .

Second leg ,Villarreal will find 2 great goal. Nihat and Forlan are my prediction:)

I would like to see Nihat score two. My reason is it will help to put a fire under Forlan. When 2 strikers learn to work together but also compete for highest scorers it brings the best out in them.

Also, I want to see Pena and Arrubarrena in defense. Obviously Josemi will not be allowed to play and after that kind of foul I don't blame the ref for a Red.

Perhpas Riquelme will be back as well as Sorin. Senna is a necessity I think too.

Yeah would be nice to see Nihat first goal for Villarreal.
    ''As for morale aswell'' .

I actualy liked Nihat &Forlan combi..it works well at frist game.
Lets hope, its gonna continue more and more..:)

Agreed. on Pena and Arrubarrena.. Pena fight very well. Arrubarrena knows very well ,where he should play on the field. ''we miss those player''.
I think ,that was the problem of Villarreal vs Maribor game.. our defens was shaky..

Riquelme's game controling and keep cool.''We realy miss Him at first game''..

Senna knows very well guarding, defens at middle of the pitch.
    We miss this aswell..
Tacchi was not so good. at this point. ''i think''.

Lets see who is gonna be Ready for Second leg.

Even more so Senna comliments Riquelme's appraoch to distribution really well. Senna can cut off passing lanes retrieve the ball get it to Riqueleme wherever he si and from there I think the play goes directly to Forlan and Nihat.

    *fingers are crossed*

    Yeah thats for sure.
Thats the one of importand key factor of Senna ''play of style''.

We always find a goal position home game or away game..
One thing for sure: if Riquelme play, home or away..no metter what team we play against..We find many opportunity for scoring goal.

    Only one things I wonder;

What kind of way they gonna play ''Maribor team'' ..

    Defenssive..or an open game(??)..

I would think given they have a 2-1 lead on us that they will try and extend their lead get the single goal and they play defensively to kill off the game.

In this tournament is the away goals(X2) format used in case of a tie or is it extra time, etc?

I think that was a bit of a "best team didn't win" game, but Josemi was just a moron to hurt his team that way over losing his temper with the ref. I liked Nihat's spunk, but his fitness didn't seem quite up to snuff. It really hurt not to have any of the WC players on the pitch.

I agree, all the newbies to start it off? I think that was a bit overzealousness by Pellegrini. Than again, he does have a way of making lineups that give the opposition confidence only to shut them down on the return leg.

I see a much different lineup this weekend. Again though, does anyone know if the away goals rule is in effect for this competition?

On a side note: I see you Spurs got Damien Duff correct? He'll partner well with that team I think.

Wassup guys ... good to see a thread for the game.

First off, Taccinardi extended his loan before the WC and before the Juve fiasco. So he will be a part of the team this season.

Also, Arrubarrena got injured in his knee in pre-season and was going to miss around 6 weeks ... he went thru surgery right away. He should be back for around the start of La Liga. Marca report

As far as Riquelme and Senna, they were still on vacation as far as I know and won't be part of the game on Saturday. Sorin has still 2 year contract, but it seems that he will be sold, possibly to Tottenham, therefore he wouldn't be used as that would unable him to play in Europe this coming season (3rd round of Intertoto counts for this). Anyway, Sorin is also on vacation still.

This was the team that played last Saturday:
    Barbosa
Josemi - Gonzalo Rodríguez - Quique Alvarez - Alcántara
    Cani - Josico - Tacchinardi - Pires
    Forlán - Nihat

For the game this coming Saturday, Villarreal recovers Juan Manuel Peña, Javi Venta and José Enrique Sánchez (the new signing from Valencia). Venta will replace suspended Josemi and probably Pena will replace Quique Alvarez ... while Sanchez could take the place of Alcantara.

It will be a tough task, but the team will have had an extra week of training on them, something that was sorely missed in the 1st leg.

    Thanks for the input.

Sorin to Spurs? Man that's gonna piss off some Arsenal fans that disliked him during the CL last season. COurse it makes more sense than getting sent to Inter. Imagine the training sessions involving him and Materazzi?
