I don't dispute that Fujimori was corrupt. However a "homicidal leader". Fujimori was responsable for eliminating rebels and drug lords that were terrorizing the country. Peru became a much more stable country because of Fujimori.

I first read this a couple of weeks ago. Ten years ago (or whenever this a-hole took power), the American media (and The Economist) couldn't say enough good things about this guy. He was a "new kind" of Latin American president. He was going to bring Peru "Into the 21st century". Balance human rights while not alienating foreign investors. "A kinder, gentler, third world dictator." And so on and so forth.
At least he cracked down on terrorists, at least...had his men gun them down while they were playing soccer...with the help of the Red Cross, who the guerrillas had let in in order to take care of the hostages.

The Sendero Luminoso might disagree with you there.

And Germany became a much more stable country because of Hitler. And Mussolini made the trains run on time.

No doubt that the Shining Path was bad. Very, very bad. It's the reason why most of them are now dead and their leader Guzman will never see the light of day ever again.

The problem is that Fujimori told his army to stop trying to discern between Shining Path members, sympathizers, and potential sympathizers. If you were a union member, an environmentalist, an indigenous rights activist, or someone who criticized the government in nearly any way, you were a target for the Peruvian military. Thousands who had no link to the SP disappeared. That's why Interpol wants him, not for fighting SP.
