Gold Cup 2021 Knock-out games Final Sunday, August 1 USA 1-0 (aet) Mexico That gives the US 7 Gold Cup titles compared to Mexico's 11. But in this century the USA now leads 6-5.
Poor finishing by both teams. I couldn't believe the amount of work the US did to press Mexico all the way into 120 minute. It caused alot of isolation 1v1 on our defensive players but they held on and did a pretty good job. I think the key to that was the hustle back by midfielders to come in from behind to block shots, cause turnovers, and win possession back. The high kick to the head should have been a red card to Mexico. If a US player did that in Azteca stadium you know that would be an ejection. Ugly brutal fight with US landing the last blow at 118th minute. All the 45,00 Mexican fans raised the atmosphere and pumped a bunch of money into the coffers. We will take the cash and trophy - Thank you very much.

I just rewatched the game, passed out at halftime last night. I agree, it was a battle. I'm stunned that we didn't let one in, defending was on point last night. It is amazing to see the amount of energy here for the Cup. Warms my heart to see such a passion for the game. Hopefully that continues and builds.

If you like your history of the beautiful game then this is an article for you! https://www.espn.com/soccer/uruguay...o-remove-two-of-four-world-cup-stars-on-shirt As it has been know for decades, in the pre mundial era, the Olympic tournament was their blessed event FIFA crowned a global champion of soccer for those years in 1924 and 1928. Uruguay have every right to wear 4 stars on their crest! It is very odd for FIFA suits to now go long on the Uruguay people to back away from their long standing claim, which imho is clearly legitaite, of being a world champion.

Viewpoint of a long time US Soccer fan (since 1978). Under definitely won the field grass level bet. Its a new look El Salvador team under American Hugo Perez. Which is a great story itself. There was a day that coaches for the United States came from other countries. Now we are starting to reverse that script with American's coaching foreign teams. Another sign of the changing times. Two views on the game. Never bad mouth a result in Concacaf on the road. US had 1.7 xG v. ELS's 0.3 xG. So we did enough to win. Incredibly young attacking corp failed to finish -- what a shock! I think the game played out about as expected. Much closer to a US win than an ELS win. No need to panic. Second view: San Salvador is probably the best chance for any team to get a road win. This is not the hex with 3 slots for 6 teams. Its the Octagon with 3 slots for 8 teams. Meaning home wins + road draws = 100% qualification. This year I don't think that formula gets you 100%. At the least, it puts tremendous pressure on every game getting a result, and could leave you out if 3 other teams pick up a couple road wins. Best view: The point is ok. While San Salvador is best opportunity for road wins, Canada, Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica are all nearly just as good a chance at a road win. Keep producing 1.7 xG v 0.3 xG on the road against the second tier of Octagon participants and we will be just fine, even with one or two games dropping points at home. While I put Jamaica in the second tier I never count on points at the Office. Jamaica got some wicked voodoo going there.
Schedule adjusted standings ** 1. HON +1, 1goal USA +1 CRC +1 --------- 4. MEX 0 --------- 5. JAM 0, -1 goal dif 6. CAN -2, 1 goal ELS -2 PAN -2 ** If you don't think adjusting the table for home/away then your not paying attention. Historically road teams have won only 18% of concacaf hexagonal games. 18%!! You also didn't pay attention to the last match day of the 2017 hexagonal.
Good point Don. Away to any CONCACAF WCQ location and as much as I expect our current U.S. National Team to score on the night but a nil-nil is no need to panic. Cuz as you mentioned, always take a road point in WCQ.
The more I think about it -- the more I'm convinced that we could be watching the greatest concacaf World Cup Qualifying tournament EVER. Given what we know about changes coming to the World Cup in 2026 -- namely field expansion from 32 to 48 teams and 2 more qualifying slots for Concacaf -- I don't think we will ever see anything like this again. Mix in the the improvement in Concacaf second-tier nations like Canada, Honduras, Panama, El Salvador, Jamaica, etc. This may be a magical time not see again -- especially in my lifetime. Then the dynamic of a compressed 7-month campaign with 14 games. I only wish Concacaf would keep games from overlapping (except for the last match-day) so I could watch every game live.
Schedule adjusted standings after Match day 2 +3 MEX +2 HON +1 PAN ------------- -1 CAN 0 gd, 2g ------------- -1 USA 0 gd, 1g -2 CRC -3 JAM -4 ELS Match of the day: ELS v HON in San Salvador. Minutes 115 to 120 are incredible end to fantastic game.
