http://theoffsiderules.blogspot.com/ SF always has something insightful to say, but this is worthy of some talk. I had always thought I'd root for both teams.....
No. I am pulling for DC tonight and Houston on Thursday. And leave it to a NYRB fan to want a game to be played on astroturf.
Guys -- the fate MLS doesnt rest on this pair of matches coming up. MLS is here to stay and believe it or not and opening day will happen this Saturday wether DC and Houston win or lose. Therefore as a loyal RBNY fan, i hope the goats piss all over DC and send them home crying. However, in terms of an event status, Offsiderules has an interesting perspective. A Chivas de Guadalajara vs Houston match would be a terrific event.
dude......Houston v DC would be awesome. If we can do that, then....man oh man...we're the best (in a cool S. Jackson voice) motherf*ckers on the block man... GIT-R-DONE!!
I'm rooting hard for both teams, I'd love to see an all American final. That ensures an American team is going to Japan.
Well, I think MLS would benefit more from hosting two CCC final games and having representatives in both Copa Sudamericana and the Club World Cup than from the alternative the blog writer is suggesting (one home game, albeit against a Mexican side, and probably only a single rep in CWC/Sudamericana). Furthermore, I think if both DCU and Houston can advance, the stakes for this summer's SuperLiga (featuring four MLS teams and games thoughout the country) will be increased exponentially and will increase the US/Mexico rivalry (and clearly extend to to clubs, which has been lacking). Yeah, it would be nice for Houston to host a game against Chivas. It would be better for MLS to win both matches.
True, but winning these games helps MLS's credibility internationally. And as a RBNY fan, you should want anything to increase the reputation and visibility of the league because it will help the league grow and be able to sign premium international talent. This is particular pertinent to RBNY as it would likely be a favored destination for big names if MLS is sought after as a league to play in.
As a Dynamo fan, I could care less who wins between Chivas and DCU. Either way, Houston has to advance first in order to face either one of them in the finals. I would LOVE to see us beat Pachuca in their stadium. Both DCU and Chivas are quality clubs, and I think it will be a good match to watch tonight.
DCU fan tonight. But not when Houston meets then in a couple of weeks. This is just too big an opportunity to waste. An all USA CCC final? I think I'd be behind any team except Baby********inGoat in this tourney. And a Momma********inGoat v MLS team? Oh hell ya, I'm behind the MLS team! Make the Goat********ers cry tonight!!!!
It's a good place to be in, but we're not counting our gophers before they're pulled out of the ground.
Lets look at this another way. If both DC United and Houston Dynamo take out the Mexican clubs this week, the SuperLiga will get a LOT more interesting. But the more important reason to root for both MLS clubs is the credibility of the League. MLS can't purchase credibility. No matter how many Designated Players it signs it will always be viewed as second rate by those that knock it. The only way that the League will win people over is to EARN credibility. And the only way to do that is through meaningful International competition. People need to see MLS clubs competing against the best clubs in the world in meaningful matches. The only way to get to the best clubs in Europe is through the Club World Cup. And right now the only way to get to the top clubs in South America is through the Copa Sudamericana. And the only way to get to either tournament is to make the CCC Final.
Sigh. Pachuca is known as the Tuzos (gophers). It was a play on the "don't count your chickens before they're hatched" mantra. Didn't say it was a good joke.
How would a game between a Mexican team and an American team in front of a pro-Mexican crowd aid American soccer?
