I don't know about this idea. Does P. Rico have the economy to support MLB, even on a limited scale? I suppose it can't be much owrse than Montreal though.
MLB would have to accept cupones (like food stamps) at the kiosk or there would have to be one hell of a lot of tourists.
I think it's genius. I mean, if you're going to lose money on a team in a city, you might as well move them to Puerto Rico so the players of that team and the visiting teams can have a nice location, better than Montreal to say the least. I doubt the average attendence there would be worse than Montreal's anyway... Plus, can you imagine the outrage here if we lost a Baseball franchise to Puerto Rico, it'd be classic.
The Buffalo News reports that The Rich family (owners of AAA side Buffalo Bisons) is gaining interest in the expos. They would play in the 28k seater in downtown Buffalo.
You jest, but that's what I immediately thought as well. I do know that the NFL is well attended there in the cold Buffalo winter, so why not give them something to do in the nice summer months? At least it's a thought. I have no idea what the interest is in having MLS in Buffalo (though Rochester would cry bloody murder). -Tron
For the good of soccer in America, you really DON'T want a franchise in Buffalo. Dunn Tire park is a really nice stadium, but it wouldn't jive with soccer. The summers here are stifling hot, so it would be as comfortable as Dallas in July. The media is ferociously anti-soccer. The last soccer venture, the indoor Buffalo Blizzard, started out promising, regularly filling the old War Memorial Auditorium, and showed their games on Empire Sports Network. After that, it slowly declined into oblivion with the formation of the new indoor league. Although, I'd like to see pro soccer in Buffalo once again, the best course for the league would be to travel 90 minutes northeast.
Montreal is one of the great cities in North America. It is very fun. If they had a solid ownership group, that marketed the team well, they would be fine in Montreal. However, they have alienated all the fans.
Hey, San Juan has something like 1.5 million people. The whole island has something like 4 million people. It's a good place for a baseball team. When is MLS going to expand there?
