This is an article written by Mexican Women's National Team Captain Monica Gonzalez after the Mexican Soccer Federation. Interesting. Link
The article is very interesting, is sad that Mónica is not able to make this kind of remarks in Mexico, yet. Her english accent when speaking spanish remember us all that she is different, especialy her cultural background, but this is not the first time that I hear about her idea to make a difference in Mexican women through sports. Thanks for letting us know about the article.
I didn't know that the Mexican women's team played in front of a crowd so large, the same as the 1999 final! Is Gonzalez mistaken or are those the real numbers? It's nice to see Mexico's captain taking a stand for her team. Hopefully her claims will not fall on deaf ears.
It is for real, Mexico played against Japan in the first leg for the 2003 World Cup final berth in front of 90,000 people at the Aztec stadium and the game was broadcast by the two largest networks live. Unfortunally, the next time the Mexican WNT played at the Aztec stadium against Australia, and four days later at the Jalisco stadium in Guadalajara, only around 10,000 people went to the games. Normally in smaller stadiums in Mexico, the team gets only 3 to 5 thousend fans to the stands. Traditionally, the Mexican WNT has the same number of fans in small stadiums in the US as those it has in Mexican facilities.
