Thread started on our boards to try and finally get an award up for our two sides for our regular season meetings (playoff and USOC are being debated as we speak).

We need your input so we can try to organise something...We were thinking of a shield instead of a cup to make our rivalry different...hope you can help us..

    cheers.

I am not too excited about any kind of shield/cup/trophy. We have a real rivalry and don't need any kind of token to mark it. Do the Giants and Dodgers play for a fan cup? No. Does that make their rivalry any less intense? No.

On the other hand, I have seen the suggestions of a Highway 101 shield. Only don't bronze it, paint it teal and gold.

    Oakland, damn straig
    What he said.

If Chicago and Dallas want to swap spit every year, fine. But I'd rather just enjoy watching LA beat the bejeezus out of San Jose on a regular basis.

the fact that this is being concidered is a mockary of the only true rivalry in this league. lets face we dont like northeners and they dont like us. Its a matter of pride. trophys, awards, sheilds, is just crap other teams have to make up to say they are rivals. We know we hate you, we know you hate us lets leave at as the pure anomosity it is. And finally f- the cupquakes go galaxy!!!!!!!!!!

Some random drivel... a bit long, but to get the point across...

There should be someone on the Galaxy side who is interested. If the award is to be given retroactively then in your case you can say what you want. There has been something that has been tossed around for the past years on and off, but the reasons have been cost, no one is around, and so forth.

So, something bronzed (shield, bottle, cup, a stone, etc etc etc) will cost less than a few hundred bucks. It's nothing big but take something, have a few people responsible on each side for administering the trophy and a charter and it's all set. Even more so is that it won't be administered or set down by the Quakes and Galaxy management (re: the GMs shoving it down at our throats).

The Giants and Dodgers don't have anything to my knowledge, as do the Athletics and Angels (though the Giants and Athletics and Dodgers and Angels respectively do play for a trophy, even more so since they started playing in the regular season). However, the Sharks, Kings, and Ducks do play for a trophy that's instituted by their respective fans. There might have been something in the past where the 49ers and Rams played for something but when they moved to St. Louis it was discontinued...

Now, there are a few on the Quakes side who are interested whereas there must be a few down in LA who would like nothing more than to gloat at us.

Be aware that the regular season title called the Supporter's Shield was instituted by the fans because elsewhere that is the standard that determines the champion. Had it not been for them, it would have been a nothing award.

Just to make it short this might be the one chance to make it into an even bigger rivalry. If not, then let the other teams take center stage.

If the Galaxy wins the season series then it looks like a few on the other side won't be able to take it around town or have a chance to taunt it in front of a few Quakes fans around SoCal. Heck, even raise it high and say what you want on ESPN2 if the games are on television...

This is probably the one sport where fans get a chance to hold a trophy, any one. I didn't see any regular fan hold the "World" Series when the Angels won, whereas there must have been a fan fest for the MLS Cup...

    Cheers!

    Nap,

    Thanks for the thoughtful comments.

As you know, I am not very much in favor of the shield. Its not that I object to there being a trophy. Its mainly that I think we have a real and great rivalry going with our respective teams already and I do not think that piece of hardware will add anything to that. The rivalry will rise or fall depending on whether it remains competative and whether the fans of each team continue to feel strongly about the other.

Having said that, if there are people who want to take this project on, all the more power to them. And, I would be willing to throw something into the kitty to help financially. Keep me on the list of donors and let me know where to send my contribution.
