Hey guys I was hoping that you Brazilian Die-hards could give me some information on Socrates. I am pretty sure he played in 1986 World Cup.

Was he left footed? Right footed?

    What position did he play?

And what was his playing style??

What clubs did he play for?

And What other world cups did he play in?

Any other info will be appreciated!

And i will rep everyone who contributes!! :)

    Thanks!

    He's actually still playing.

He's somewhere around 50 years old, still chain smokes and drinks, but he's playing for Garforth Town, a non-league team in England.

As far as World Cups, he only played in 1982 and 1986.

Actually, he only played for that one game for Garforth Town.

Socrates was one of the coolest players EVER. He is also a doctor (really). Along with Cryuff and a couple of others, he is the most intellectual of all the great players.

He was a midfielder who played his club ball for Corinthians (and Botofogo, Fiorentina, Santos, and Flamengo). His playing style was quintessential Brazilian; very elegant. He didn't seem to be a hurry, but struck incredibly fast. He was the master of the backheel, and someone once said "he played better backward than most players did forward."

He was at his best in the 1982 world cup where he was the captain of that great team. The videos of these matches are amazing. That team also featured Eder on the left, Falcao and Zico.

As a person, he was very political and outspoken, starting the "Corinthians Democracy," movement as Brazil's military dictatorship ended, and engaging in quite a bit of agitation. He still does. I could go on and on about his politics.

The last chapter of Alex Bellos' book is about Socrates exclusively, and is very informative about his political views.

Wow! How strange. I was watching Gol Tv this morning and I was trying to think of this guy. Aristotle no aristophenes....Socrates. Watched the 82 world cup with toby charles calling the action on pbs. This guy made me fall in love with soccer. What is the title of Bello's (sp?) book. Is there a biography?
