I spoke with a top source with the San Jose Earthquakes today, who revealed the following: The redesigned official San Jose Earthquakes website will be launched this Thursday. The Earthquakes' TV schedule should be released within the next 1-2 weeks. All 30 regular season Quakes league games will be televised: 19 nationally and 11 locally. Contrary to what's been suggested elsewhere, there will be at least one ESPN2/ESPN2-HD game broadcast from Buck Shaw Stadium this season. The Quakes have worked with Comcast to place TV ads on various stations to start airing either next week or the week after; the team has also placed newspaper ads to start appearing in 1-2 weeks. The ad campaigns for both TV and newspapers will be for a significant expense (definitely more than what was spent here before). The top source also stated that as was learned with the A's, now (early-mid February) is about the right time to start advertising for a season that'll start in early April - advertising beforehand (particularly in January) ended up being wasted money, especially amidst the NFL's buildup to the Super Bowl in late January or early February. A deal was struck with the largest local Spanish-language media to provide Spanish-language radio broadcasts for all the games. The top source was a bit more vague about whether or not there'll be English-language radio coverage. I hope that helped. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Great info Goodsport! Not that I won't be at every home match, and if I can swing it a couple of away ones as well... but great news...
all fantastic news Goodsport! Thanks for passing it along. without meaning to sound ungrateful, was there any word in your discussions on the aquisition of a proven goal-scorer? We need a striker.
don't they count games on the DirectKick as being national? it's not like they're gonna be on ESPN 19 times.
Wow, I feel so much better. Can't wait to see this stuff come to fruition. They're working on their end. Where's our grassroots efforts? Come on guys! I'm up in Sac right now, so I can't do much, but down in the city and San José, you guys should be spreading the word. Maybe you are, I dunno. Like somebody said, one thing remains. Some concerns about holes in our squad! We need a few more competent players and at least 2 more exciting ones, one being a STRIKER!!!! NOW!
Thanks everyone. Again, I'm glad I could help. To answer the questions thus far: I didn't get around to asking about new players. Perhaps next time. The league's national channels include ESPN2/ESPN2-HD, Fox Soccer Channel/Fox Sports en Español, HDNet and Telefutura/Galavision (as well as ABC/ABC-HD for the league opener and MLS Cup). I'm guessing that the locally broadcast Earthquakes games (which, unlike the nationally broadcast games, will also be included with the MLS Direct Kick Package) will be on what's now called Fox Sports Net Bay Area, but whose name is expected to change to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area by April. At least some of the games may also be broadcast simultaneously on the station's HD channel (FSNBA-HD/CSNBA-HD). GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Thanks for the info Goodsport. I know a lot of posters on these boards have turned a little negative over a perceived lack of information from the Quakes (imagine that, BS turning negative!). Maybe they could have put a few more updates on the web site so far. Overall, though, I think these guys have shown that they know what they're doing. I'm confident that we have a top-notch organization running our team.
what? no pic of the women of 'Hot Dog on a Stick' to accompany your info Goodsie? more seriously, well done. Tony
Great info... I only know that they've hired Crazy George to do the games and the local English radio is still not settled and may not be.
That sucks...one of the greatest memories of Quakes games as a kid was the ride home with Dad listening to the post-game show with the locker room interviews and goal replays.
Yeah last I heard there likely wouldn't be English Radio because frankly... no one listens. Or at least not enough to justify the expense, better to spend that same money on HD TV broadcasts because soccer on TV > English soccer on the radio. Infact other than baseball most sports aren't that good on the radio IMO.
I don't know...I think it depends on who is calling the game. I'm not going to name anyone in particular since that will likely lead to a bashing of my opinion on who is good and who isn't. I think if it's done right people would listen. Last time the Quakes were around people were asking for it...unfortunately they only put a few games on the radio during the season, so it never really caught on. Personally...I'd really like to see an MLS XM channel like they had during the World Cup.
Problem is, my contact at Hot Dog on a Stick (the girl in the picture wearing the funny hat) was unfortunately relocated to Orange Julius a little while ago. However, word has it that there's now a new contact at HDoaS. Once I find her, I'll try and resume my reports from there. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Ok, telling us the girl with the funny hat in that photo is like telling us your pal in the pool is the one with the wet hair...
Not only that, but I was told that my new contact at Hot Dog on a Stick will be easy to spot since, like my old contact, she'll also be wearing a funny hat. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Touche... (Sometimes those girls are easier to Id if you say, "She's the one in the uniform that does not make you lose your appetite". Or "She's the one everybody wants to watch pound the lemons into lemon aid")
