Indiana's Mike Ambersley was arrested for public drunkenness and illegal possession of alcohol, I got this link from Soccer America's e-mail newsletter. I wonder if he'll have to miss any games because of suspension, he's a heck of a player, apparently heck of a drinker too! http://www.hoosiertimes.com/stories/2003/04/25/sports.0425-HT-B1_JPP31024.sto
Crappy news I guess, but it does give me a reason to post a link to his Indiana profile where he looks like, well, a fat drunken kid. http://iuhoosiers.com/menssoccer/roster/ambersley.html
College kids are drinking? I'm shocked, just shocked I tell you! I can't get worked up about this. Yeah, he should have been smarter than this but this is what college kids do - stoopid things and many of them involve alkee-hol. I expect that Jerry will slap him with a suspension of a couple of games or something but this isn't that big a deal, IMO.
Agreed I agree with Sandon on this one. College kids drink, that's part of it, like it or not. I think it is maybe more prevalent among college athletes b/c of the pressures and stress that they are under. There days are pretty much planned for them from the time they get up until the time they go to sleep. He just got caught and that is unfortunate.
Re: Agreed Please elaborate for me on this one if possible. This is driving college athletes to drink? For one, I see the drinking age as too high in this country, even as I near 30. My parents let me drink occasionally in high school and by the time I got to college I didn't have as much problems with binge drinking as some of my buddies did. At 18 you can sign your a$$ away to Uncle Sam, vote, but God forbid enjoying a little feel good juice.
What I'm surprised about is that he got in trouble. There have been numerous incidents on campus here where MIP or PI have been swept away because they were soccer players.
Pathetic You guys are pathetic... Yeah, a lot of college kids drink. Let's excuse everything because he got caught right? Wrong. College kids drink but not all of them get arrested. And he wasn't arrested for just drinking, don't be so nieve. You guys are rediculous. Figure it out. Obviously, if you get drunk to the point that it gets you arrested, that's not ACCEPTABLE.
Ambersley had some serious eligibility problems last year that required summer school. This latest incident could put his future at IU in doubt.
ambersley arrested re; soccerrules take on this issue. i could not agree more. i considered this topic important enough to end my short retirement from posting on this board. you guys need supervision and direction too greatly for me to selfishly withold it. i read the apologists minimizing Ambersley's behavior and realized these guys don't have a clue about the type of character, work and discipline necessary to play well at the D1 level. where are u guys on the Iowa State b-ball coach, and the Bama football coach? Boys will be boys? "scuse me, while i kiss the sky".
Re: ambersley arrested People love to persecute don't they. Unless you know he was doing something other being stupid and drunk give the kid a break.
get your story straight before you accuse! Listen... to all of you on bigsoccer who just love to gossip and think that you know it all.. stop accusing college kids of things that you dont know the story behind. Every college will go out at some time in there career during there 4 years. Ambersley on this occasion Responsibly walked home instead of drive. Didnt get into a car with an intoxicated person instead walked home with a group of friends. Unfortunately on the way his friends were wrestling and a police car pulled up. Every kid ran away from the police... Mike did not. He was not found laying in the middle of the road, as an article states. Yes D1 athletes need to be responsible and very careful of what they do I agree, but you cannot accuse a kid who gets pulled over for walking home after a night out for being any of the things all of you have accused him of in any earlier thread. You dont live in the area and you dont know the real story behind it all. Stop gossiping on big soccer and lets start talking about more relevant topics in college besides the one time a kid got caught for drinking. All of the threads above are based on biased opinions of people who are thriving to read about some news of kids getting into trouble. I gaurantee that every weekend kids on every team go out and party and drink. Maybe at other colleges kids get away with things because they are athletes, but rules apply to everyone and a drinking ticket is not what you all are making it out to be. Its college... he was WALKING home... would rather have him drive. Give me a break and start a thread worth while besides making a students action look to be the crime of the century on bigsoccer.com!
Re: get your story straight before you accuse! Amen. People make mistakes, thank God he didn't make a bigger one by driving or being in the car with someone else that was driving. If this was a "regular" college student, it goes COMPLETELY unnoticed. Who on this board can say that haven't done worse than this at some point in their lives?
Re: ambersley arrested I for one, who could have been a D1 athlete, and with friends all over this country playing D1, D2, D3, and in MLS, I think i've got a bit of a clue what type of "character, work, and discipline" is necessary. I'm not really sure what you are implying about that statement, but if you for one second think that even half of a D1 team doesn't drink or whatever because of their commitment to the sport, then you really need to wake up. Just be glad it isn't cocaine.
Just out of curiosity, who was really being all that harsh in their response to this story? It seems to me that everyone added rather sarcastic jokes, I don't recall any threads that took this incident all that seriously or implied that any actions be taken against Ambersley. Folks seemed to have fun with a non-serious event, college students drinking, hence the "Animal House" references. Why are people getting their panties in a bunch over this?
Timing? I didn't see this come out at the time, but looking at the time of the posting it was probably during Little 500 weekend. This is the biggest drinking weekend in America, to be honest, and I know he wouldn't have been the only one arrested. Plus BPD and IUPD have a new policy this year to arrest people who are walking home instead of driving. Smart policy, right? Let's discourage responsibility. Anyway, it shouldn't be a big deal and I doubt it will be.
Sorry... Yeah your right!!! Let's see, Is Mike 21 yet? If not, he broke the law, but's let's excuse him because he's a college kid. Grow up!
He's 20 right now, so it is illegal. While there's no excuse, it also shouldn't be a big deal for those outside of the team. Something for the team to deal with, not us.
ambersley's a stud Ambersley will be back on the field for the Hoosiers in the fall. He will have a sick year where he will score 15 goals, and regain the form of his freshman year. For all of you ragging on him on these posts, find something better to do. He made a mistake just like everyone else that views this site. How many of you out there didn't recieve a drinking citation while in college?..To all of you naysayers watch Ambersley lead the Hoosiers in the fall.
Well, for Jerry Yeagley's sake I hope you're right, Rooney. But after losing Noonan, Mack, Swann and Presser, there's gonna be some big holes to fill, particularly putting the ball in the hole. So, if Ambersley doesn't step up - like last year when he only had 2 goals and 2 assists - Jerry's last season is gonna be a long one. Oh, and it also doesn't help if Grabavoy makes the U20 team that makes the World Youth Championship, as he'll miss several games in November.
One thing I've noticed about Ambersly, he always looks a bit overweight. Maybe he needs to switch to Bud Light.
