one of my favorite markwayne mullin tidbits is right before the January 6th riot he dismissed on local radio people saying there'd be violence because, "We're not the Democratic Party. We're not antifa." Still have my notes from it. pic.twitter.com/gY9HsCn2hk— Andrew Kaczynski (@KFILE) March 5, 2026

100% The trouble with Hegseth is that he thinks he's George C. Scott in Patton, but in reality comes across like George C. Scott in Dr. Strangelove. https://t.co/2CufRwQoJb— Edward Feser (@FeserEdward) March 5, 2026

He actually sounds like a National Guard captain trying to motivate his troops with a bunch of lethality tinged Bro-mides. And they're all rolling their eyes at him.

This is how Hegseth sees himself: he sees himself as a modern crusader. He insists he’s the good guy and is damn proud of it. A f’n religious zealot. Surprised he hasnt 100% focused on hitting religious sites.
I’ve seen this point made on occasion, and I think it should be much more prominent. MAGA is fascist, and fascism is anti humanity. It goes back to how MAGA is convinced George Soros is paying for all the protests, because their worldview doesn’t have any space for people caring about other people as part of the human family. I wonder if Talarico in particular, but also next gen Democratic thought leaders generally, can find a phrase or slogan that tries to bring back the idea of Americans sharing our destiny. Because part of MAGA is that if a natural disaster happens in blue America, ******** those guys. You saw it with many Republicans after Sandy. Part of MAGA is that Trump doesn’t even have to pretend to be the president of blue America. Try telling Trump that there’s a win-win solution to an issue and he quite literally won’t be able to process that. Basically, America needs a revolution in values. Traditionally, those movements have been rooted in religion, like abolition. Or the modern civil rights movement. Even bad movements like prohibition. The problem for America today is that the party that should lead a revolution in values is secular. (That’s the Democrats’ center of gravity; yes, there is the black church and its politics, and we Lutherans and the Episcopalians and a few others are trying, but liberal Christianity is leaderless and weak. Secular thought is the Democratic mainstream.). The party that has tied itself to religion is the fascist* party. No way Republicans lead a spiritual revolution rooted in a renewal of loving one’s neighbor. The point of calling a bombing campaign “not politically correct” is to make empathy itself illegitimate. Once mourning dead children is reframed as softness, there’s no floor. Anything can be justified as long as objecting to it can be painted as weakness. https://t.co/GTRAXN8DYG— Jake Scott, MD (@jakescottMD) March 5, 2026 *When typing “fascist” I made some minor typo and it autocorrected to “gas cost,” which in context was pretty funny.

Stephen Hayes was the guest on The Daily Show when Stewart dropped one of his most iconic lines, the one where Stewart lists a series of bad things and then says something like, and you can’t tell me which nation I’m talking about. The point is, Hayes was a leading neocon in the run up to the Iraq War.
