Assuming that Kaz didn't ******** up, but quickly edit the wikipedia entry to cover himself. I'd check again on Friday.
(a) link to onion article "the worst person you know just made a good point". (b) the questions were kind of dumb. It doesn't really matter exactly what percentage of Iran is Shia. Ted Cruz could have answered "doesn't matter, we have to stop them from getting nuclear weapons" and it would have gone better for him. (b) Ted Cruz was a debate champion in college. Usually he's pretty good at not looking like an ass in an interview, but he must have not been expecting Cucker to come out firing. He was probably expecting a softball interview, or he's spent so much time in his bubble that he's lost his edge.
The Detroit/Michigan diaspora is so large that on my travels I’ve met someone from my hometown at a bar in NYC. Someone also recognized me while on a trip to Wyoming. We were miles from civilization. Or case in point, all those Lions fans selling out stadiums when they’re the visiting team. Pretty sure we’d have no problem taking over if we were all sleeper agents. Michigan is a large state after all, and Detroit has a metro area of 4 million. Chicago is also kind of a natural place for Detroiters to drift to. Especially in the last 40 plus years, there’s work. That or anywhere out west. Or if you’re older, somewhere down south. We’re everywhere.
When I was in Chicago in the 90s, I was surprised to find on my saturday afternoon walks how many bars were flying the Michigan Wolverine flags and the green and white S flag of Michigan State, like, each of them would be double the Notre Dame flags. It would be hard to walk a mile without Michigan fans from one school or the other to watch the Wolverines or the Spartans play football.
U of M has people everywhere. It’s also what my friend jokingly refers to as Harvard of the Midwest. I would not be surprised if a good chunk of those places were filled with non-Michiganders who went to Ann Arbor. Michigan State on the other hand, is the school where Michiganders tend to go. It’s also quite a party school. And a basketball school, given that Magic Johnson and Draymond Green are alums. I would easily guess they were from Michigan if I visited.
Point of order, you two. My understanding is that Hughes moved to Chicago's tony north shore as a yout, and worked in Chicago as a young man. Does he still count as a Detroiter, based on all of that?
My rule is if you maintain fondness for your hometown and such no matter how long ago you moved you’re still part of that city. Especially if your parents made the move. And you have memories of the place. He named the character of Clark Griswold after Griswold street in Detroit (nowhere near Grosse Pointe where he grew up), he’s mentioned before that he’s a Red Wings fan, and the jersey Cameron wore in Ferris Bueller belonged to Hughes. That alone makes him a Detroiter. JK Simmons moved out of Detroit when he was young, the man is a massive Tigers fan that he’s been in the broadcast booth a few times.
If you've been to Ann Arbor you might change your tune. Now, Ohio State, is a granfalloon. Michigan State, well let's just say they do know how to burn couches, that's for sure. And they can party. It's kind of disturbing. Regardless, both schools are excellent. With good campuses in their own right. Although I prefer Ann Arbor for a lot of reasons. Mainly the climbing gym, Vault of Midnight, and various restaurants, and of course, Zingermann's. In a random connection, Michigan has Gerald Ford and the Unabomber as alums. Then there's the numerous people in US government who attended.
One aspect of media bias is, after the Iraq War turned into a complete calamity, did the media say hey, those people who were against the war understand things better so let’s talk to them more? No, they did not. Everyone who was right about Bush’s economic policies, or Trump’s immigration policies, are they the go-to pundits every Sunday morning? No, they are not. In fact, they’re under booked. We’re subjected to a parodic number of Trump voters in midwestern diner stories. Have any pundits/think tankers/etc. been ostracized from giving input because they were so ********ing wrong? If there are any I haven’t heard of them. My point is, whatever the media’s underlying ideology, what matters is how they act as journalists. And as journalists, they’re very, very biased against people who are right, and instead give extra weight to people who were wrong, because balance or something. EDIT to be clear I get that’s not what happening here with Tyler Austin Harper, the man with 3 last names and also 3 first names. This just prompted my thoughts here.
Trump whose idea of work is playing golf. Didn’t the Howard Stern Show I use the sound effect of someone hitting a golf ball whenever they reported any news on Bush 41?
Yeah, but if it was the birthday of some confederate traitor general who fought against the US, he'd be all for it.
