Learning French (badly)helped me explain grammar when teaching English in ways I wouldn't be able to otherwise. It also came in handy for me because I started teaching at Louisiana State University. Some of those Cajuns came from substandard schools and didn't really have English composition down. But because I knew French, I knew that they were making mistakes because they were writing in (spoken) French syntax. My fellow TAs who did not know French had a much harder time with the Cajuns than I did.

Something I've noticed living in a Spanish speaking country: being a native English speaker fvcks up your ability to learn to speak other languages.

I'm afraid so. I'd never heard of her, so I looked her up:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kshama_Sawant

Kshama Sawant (/kʃʌmɑː sɑːˈwʌnt/; born October 17, 1973)[1][2] is an Indian-American politician and economist who served on the Seattle City Council from 2014 to 2024. She was a member of Socialist Alternative, the first and only member of the party to date to be elected to public office.
    ....
In 2024 Sawant announced she had left Socialist Alternative and formed her own party Revolutionary Workers.[7]
    ....
    Political ideology
Sawant is a member of Revolutionary Worker.[107] Previously she was a member of Socialist Alternative, the United States section of the Trotskyist international organization the International Socialist Alternative, formerly the Committee for a Workers' International (CWI).[44][106]

Sawant said she rejects working with either the Democratic or the Republican party and advocates abandoning the two-party system.[108] She has called for "a movement to break the undemocratic power of big business and build a society that works for working people, not corporate profits—a democratic socialist society."[109] In 2013, Sawant urged other left-wing groups, including Greens and trade unions, "to use her campaign as a model to inspire a much broader movement".[109]

She would be fine with Trump because the chaos his administration would create, people like her believe, will ultimately crash the system so that a peaceful progressive alternative can rise from the ashes.

Because that always happens when societies collapse.

"Leftist"in the US is a very large umbrella that can go from Obama to Bernie....So using "lefties" like that is at best misleading if not in bad faith.
That woman is a from the loonie fringe and should be categorized as such.

Agreed. But she is a leftist.

The problem, in lazy-ass American journalism, is when "left" gets associated with the Democratic party the way "right" is associated with the Republican party.

The lunatic Right in American actually votes, and votes for the Republican party. The lunatic left in the United States most often does not vote, and if they do, almost never, every for the Democratic party unless it's for someone who can't possibly win an election.

I'm with her on the problems we face that are posed by the two-party system. But people like her who want to do away with the two party system RIGHT NOW and AS SOON AS POSSIBLE are too stupid to realize that the result with be one party rule, and that one party won't have the best interests of the majority of Americans at heart.

As you said, it is a lazy characterization. She is a fringe and a loonie for all intent and purposes.

Leftist as in the woman in the video is a member of a party called the Socialist Alternative and held office in Seattle. And apparently, she's quite hated by everyone which explains a lot.

As Zappa once said, unlike the unicorn these people do exist.

I've always noticed that a lot of fringe left wing stuff always comes from the Pacific Northwest if it's not coming from Ann Arbor or the usual places. I also know if some of them tried their thing in MI they'd be laughed out of places like Ferndale.

That said, there are problematic leftists in the Dem side. They just don't have the pull they or the media think exists. Tlaib's a loudmouth and an attention seeker (And she'll get frozen out), Omar is too but also keeps quiet, Bowman and Bush lost their primaries because they were clowns. The only smart one is AOC but she has her flaws.. On the state side two MI progressives torpedoed a bill that would've been great for public transit because of corporate stuff. Like I get it, but come on, we have a weak transport system and you're just doing it out of principle. Present an alternative, don't do the principle of the thing argument.

It's highly likely that these attendees are either from Macomb County or Livonia and haven't been to Eastern Market since 1992.

It's worth remembering that the chant "******** Joe Biden" was coined at a Portland Antifa demonstration, and not at a NASCAR race.

Personally, I think it's funny that NASCAR fans were jumping on a bandwagon already occupied by Antifa, but that's how it is.

it’s been kind of bizarre watching some too online progressives self radicalise to the point where they can’t even support Kamala when Joe dropped out.

But then i remembered all the Bernie Bros who wouldn’t vote for Biden because reasons

They don’t seem to have grokked the need to win elections to effect change.

Here's your mistake--you think they actually want to effect change.

When my daughter was a toddler, she would come up with words like "No, I amn't" because "didn't" is the opposite of "did," so "amn't" would be the opposite of "am." And for those little bits of meat that get stuck in your teeth, they are known as "meatlings."

A friend of my family who is a tad too online wouldn't vote for Hillary because I quote, "she;s a neoliberal." I doubt she'll go right wing (Her father worked for a prominent Detroit congressman and with the MI AG on a court case years ago), but she's going to be that annoying radical I'll probably see at gatherings once every 5 years.

Lot of those people do exist. Someone I know went from full on hippy teaching yoga to a Joe Rogan style right winger. And the crazy thing is, a bunch of my high school friends and I knew this person for ages. We were shocked when her and her husband (And he wasn't right wing to start) started posting Covid conspiracies and such.

That's a fair point: they don't want to bring about change: if they did, they would organize themselves and build coalitions. But that takes work and time. Instead, they want change to magically happen. And if it takes chaos to bring it about, whatevs.
