Not sure why I was in this thread (probably something to do with the coaching search), but I saw that amazing quote. I couldn't not respond. Now that it is active, some people might want to pile on. I was disgusted by this clown from the beginning, but from what we have learned since, it was clearly worse than I thought. I cant imagine what the Brigade thinks.
You’re the one that bumped it lol, how are you not sure? You clearly dug back to posts from years ago with the intent of reviving this thread, and you aren’t sure why?
What happen is what I already wrote. I was actually surprised it was this thread and I had bumped it. This isn't a job but a discussion board where I really don't care for most of the people on here. I dknt triple check things. Hell, I often don't even proofread. I just don't care. Now that the thread has been bumped and you are being you, id like to hear from the folks that defended that coach who was way in over his head (very similar to all those MLS players he kept calling up). We got gaslighted for over 5 years about how great Berhakter was and I personally don't see anything positive. We have basically wasted the last 7+ years trying to market MLS and turning the team into boy scouts.
The one thing I did like about behalter was that he did. A good job of recruiting big name dual nationals.
anyone still wanna defend greggg's handling of usmnt manager job now that we can see what a real manager is like?
How many trophies has Poch won? “Pochettino” is an Italian word that means “hasn’t done shit yet.” I’m very excited about how the team is playing. Almost as excited as I was when we won back to back friendlies in Germany and Holland in summer 2015. That was the cycle where Jurgen lost the team and then the first two matches and put us into a hole that Bruce got us out of, only to fall back into it like a cartoon villain in the last scene.
wow you people deserve a crappy national team its not poch vs berhalter, either....its merely the fact that berhalter sucks poch could fail in the WC and that would still be the truth
Obsessed with Berhalter, aren’t you? Add him to your sig, along with all the posters you clearly focus on.
Could you elaborate? I mean, if you had say, an EFL or Serie A or Belgian/Dutch/Portugeuse coach who was 74-49-70 in their domestic league with a 2nd place finish within the past 4 years, would you say it's worth taking a shot at them for the National team? Especially if it was your brother He never should have had the 2nd stint, but overall his 1st go round was acceptable. I didn't like all the Trapp/Yuell/Arriolla/Lllettggett call ups where he seemed determine to either put good young midfielders with MLS donkeys, or MLS donkey midfielders with possibly good young strikers, but he put together a reasonable roster for the WC. Tactically inflexible but it's not clear how much the team would have been able to carry out multiple looks at that time.
literally anyone can get results with the USMNT player pool playing in concacaf. literally every usl, college, mls coach could get results....i mean, we saw it with hudson, varas, callaghan, etc.....im not judging berhalter off results. even if i was: https://www.reddit.com/r/ussoccer/comments/1dtd9k1/in_7_years_in_charge_gregg_berhalter_failed_to/ In 7 years in charge, Gregg Berhalter failed to win against a Top 25 side in FIFA’s rankings outside Concacaf. Biggest mistake was Berhalter deciding to make defensive substitutions at halftime against Panama instead of trying to win the game. he is just a loser. defending gregggs usmnt record would be like a top euro country defending a coach tht racked up wins vs gibraltar, san marino etc bc thats exactly what gregg did in terms of quality of play and standard of performance, gregggs national team sucked. it was brutal watching his teams try to follow his choreographys im literally shocked that anyone would defend it. im not going to judge poch off of what round his usmnt makes it to in the world cup but off of competitieveness and quality of play. sometimes you need luck to win and vice versa. i just wanna see a usmnt that goes toe to toe and plays as equals vs pot 1 teams. for instance, in the netherlands game in 022...usmnt was played off the pitch, embarassingly. greggg could try 10 times and he wouldnt beat van gaal. but i think some managers could take the usmnt and beat the dutch! lvg even mentioned how the usmnt didnt adjust....its a sign that he knows the manager was the problem. and he was. gregggg could try 100 times and he wouldnt be able to beat urugauy 5-1.....literally would never hapen.
I’m absolutely going to judge Poch on results. Losing to the Netherlands 3-2 instead of 3-1 isn’t why he’s being paid a record amount for the job.
Heck, he should not have had the first stint either. He had, and still has, no real ability to coach a national side. He is an OK club coach but absolutely horrible for the national team. His teams never adapted to the unexpected and his substitution patterns were so bad that he would be unsuited for coaching at any level above U8. I do not see, and have never seen, any positive attribute from his coaching except the players, mostly, liked him and that is, more often than not, a negative for coaches. Respect, yes. Like, no. BTW: His son has some skills but he seems to lack the same kind of things pappy lacked. I think he will be OK as long as he does not need to think on the fly.
Seriously.................there's some alternate universe stuff going on in these threads. He won CONCACAF trophies, qualified for the World Cup, advanced from the group, and lost in the Round of 16. People were so intent on being outraged about Berhalter's appointment, that they forgot to enjoy the ride. They still don't appreciate it, as threads like this indicate. For Pete's sake people, HAVE FUN. The point is to enjoy the ride. Did posters think the quality of the player pool (also being the 2nd youngest team at the World Cup).................was that of a top 8 team in the World? If not, then Berhalter got that team where they should have gone. Round of 16. THe Netherlands had a better player that we did in 10 of the 11 positions. And in some positions, significantly better. Like their backline (in a 3-5-2) of van Dijk, Timber, and Ake. We can call Pulisic versus Depay, then at Barcelona, a tie if people want. Of course, Pulisic was injured and literally in the hospital after the Iran game. He wasn't 100%. There is nothing that says Pochettino is going to get the team further. So far Poch hasn't won the CONCACAF trophies that Gregg did. We are currently NOT as good as the top 10 teams in the World. We're not. If people think we're going to roll into a Round of 16 game against Belgium (or somebody of that ilk) and win, they're living in an intricate delusion. Seriously.................typically Ole Miss football knows its not as good as Ohio State. When they lose, ty'll be disappointed. Then after some reflection, they'll say "that was fun while it lasted." Here on these boards there seems to be a crowd that doesn't enjoy the ride, doesn't have fun while it lasted, and compulsively obsesses about a different universe in which the team could get a different result under a hypothetical different manager with different players. I was looking at the odds the other day of the USMNT advancing with the draw they have at WC26. 63% probability of advancing out of the group. 51% probability of winning our round of 32 game. 25% probability of winning our round of 16 game. From there it's a precipitous decline. We're barely favored, without even knowing the opponent, to win our Round of 32 game.
At this point in history, when I see people bitching about GGG, I just note the trophies and laugh at them. They’re all people who care about the internet more than the actual sport, on the field. They hate Berhalter because he didn't succeed in the “right way” whatever the hell that means. It’s about aesthetics or some shit.
U.S. vs. England in 2022 was probably the best I’ve ever seen of the U.S. at the World Cup in terms of “competitiveness and quality of play” so even if I were the type to value aesthetic over results Berhalter still didn’t fail.
It's not even aesthetics or style of play. It's because he came from MLS. Full stop. That's it. There's simply a large portion of the fanbase where EVERYTHING comes down to this. You can find the topic you think is least related to MLS and it will still worm it's way in.
Where'd you get these -- just curious. This doesn't really belong in this thread, but I've been looking for it. I think our ELO is underrated, so they are all a bit understated, but if we were to use the above, that means this team has a ~32% of matching our performance at the 2022 World Cup. That's the issue with this draw. Knockout matches are killer on your odds -- even a strong favorite is rarely better than 60-65% at that stage of the tournament and we won't be that. And because we got a group that likely won't help us in terms of advancing via the third slot ... advancing in 2026 is going to be less likely than in 2022 if you just look at the structure.
If we have a 63% of getting out of the group and a 51% chance of making the Round of 16, that means we have a 81% chance of winning our knockout match. I don't think that's likely given the chances of facing a pretty equivalent team in knockouts. But maybe.
Having a 51% chance to win a knockout match at home in a Cup where 8 3rd place teams advance doesn’t make a lot of sense either. Neither one does, frankly.
Part of it is our crappy ELO combined with the chance that we get a team with a higher ELO than us out of that 3rd place match. Finishing second isn't too bad -- Group G is pretty weak so the runner up there isn't likely to be great. But winning or finishing third ourselves yields a matchup that actually has a good chance where we are the underdog or close to it by ELO. Which again, our ELO is artificially low, but by how much?
