Anyone else got the impression that teams are so far treating this Nations League as they would friendlies? That wasn't the case in the 2018-19 NL. Maybe COVID has a lot to do with that. And add to that the fact that this rendition also doesn't mean as much -- instead of 4 Euro qualifying spots coming out of the NL you have 2 playoff spots. Anyone know how they determine the 2 playoff spots? Yes "NL ranking" but how do they rank? Do the teams finishing last in league A groups get ranked above or below the group-winners of League B?
Probably. The football shown sofar, apart from Belgium, hasnot been great at all. Winning the group is important, as it puts you in spot 1 of your WC qualification pool.
COVID has everything to do with it. Remember the laughable defending we saw in the first two weekends of Bundesliga coming back from the break? What we have here is national teams shaking off months of cobwebs, so I'm not surprised. And if anything, it's an advantage that the Nations League isn't that crucial. Could you imagine how livid the federations would be if they had to jump from the hiatus straight into WCQ? ...or you may not have to imagine at all: we'll see if Conmebol decides to stubbornly insist on starting WCQ next month. No - the 2 extra WCQ playoffs berths will go to teams that won their NL groups, but failed to finish top two in their WCQ group. Have you not watched Portugal play? And as annoyed as I was that they ruined my bet, that game in Amsterdam was the first enjoyable Italy performance I've seen in years.
Ah okay. So even if you win a League C group you could get to the playoff provided that at least 7 of the group winners in League A & B finished top 2 in WCQ?
I compare it with what the teams are capable of and what they put on the pitch was far away from those levels.
Furthermore, the UEFA WCQ playoffs will be single-leg ties with the 12 teams drawn into six semi-finals with the winners progressing to three finals, the winners of which will get a ticket to Qatar. This raises the possibility of a team winning its NL group and then having two one-off games at home to qualify for the WC! Don't forget that NL games count towards the FIFA ranking and there are several teams who are borderline between draw pots ahead of the October and November NL games which will decide the formation of the pots for the draw on 29 November.
True but isn't it quite difficult to move up or down the FIFA rankings with the new formula? I mean, Croatia is still #4 in UEFA ffs! Spain #6. If we were still using the previous formula these games would be huge as they would be the only games played this year (and thus not deflated in their point value).
UEFA have made 3 announcements on their NL: The Final Four will take place in October 2021... ...and will be hosted by the Netherlands, Italy or Poland (presumably whichever wins their group, if not Bosnia). 5 subs are now allowed.

Looks like almost all of the NL matches are being played on Saturday (11 Oct) and Tuesday instead of spreading them out so that there are matches for 6 straight days. Wonder why the change(?).
It's to accommodate the new 3-match FIFA window, with the Euro 2021 playoffs happening the Wednesday prior.
To those still warming up to the UEFA Nations League, how great must it be for fans of the Faroe Islands to see their team top a group after five matchdays? (And how terrible is it for fans of Euro 2004 participants Latvia in the same group?)
