It is a rare bird when I can unleash my creativity upon the masses... I wrote this one, the pentameter is pretty simple.. It either follows: 1-2, 1-2-3 OR 1-2, 1-2-3-4 Ta-ta, ta-ta-ta, OR Ta-Ta, Ta-Ta-Ta-Ta Words in parentheses may be omitted to fit the pentameter or beat.. It's simple, making it easier to learn, doesn;'t use curses, and we can even spread it between groups with one singing the verse, and the other singing the "refrain". It's also not hard for the drummers We Are The Black and Red, DC UN-I-TED! We're the Team You ALWAYS Dread, DC UN-I-TED! (Our) Talons Sharp, Our Wings are Spread, DC UN-I-TED! We Will Fight Until You're Dead, DC UN-I-TED! We Are The Red & Black, DC UN-I-TED! We're Deadly On The Attack, DC UN-I-TED! We Won't Cut You ANY Slack, DC UN-I-TED! We'll Lay you FLAT on Your Back! IN total its almost exactly 30 seconds, and can be repeated once to make an easy 60 second song. I am working on variations of the verses, but wanted to put this out there to see what you fine folks think.. I am definitely digging most of the entries; kudos to those writing!!! ...I don't envy you JM, it'll be a tough decision... Also, I know money is important, but I don't mind sharing.. Anyone who will help ME with getting others to sing this chant, will split the money with me. I care more about getting one, if not more, great chants for the teams and supporters groups than I do about greedily hoarding money. After all, if we get people to sing our chants, then it isn't just the chant writers who helped, the crowd as well helped... It's all about spreading the love... OH and Winning MLS CUPS!!!
Hmmmm...dare we point out that Battle Hymn derivatives are popular college fight songs in the Deep South (keeping in mind that I'm New York born and bred, so the Deep South for me starts somewhere around Delaware)?? Go to Scott or Sanford Stadiums on a nice October Saturday and you might just hear "Glory, Glory to Virginia" or "Glory, Glory to old Georgia" a couple thousand times.
Had to add the last DC UN-I-TED... I think this may work better having the chant start with Red and Black and end with fight until you're dead... Anyone agree..?
This about me trying to spur some creative person into creating something unique for D.C. United rather than plagiarizing everyone else's wordsmithery.
Ahem: Be Original, not heard on any other football pitch on this planet. Parodying a pop song is okay, but claiming a variant of a song you heard on a trip to Arsenal or Barcelona last spring, or that you sung for your high school football team, is not.
I for one thought that this one was pretty clever and it follows an already familiar beat making it easier for the "chemically effected" members who will be singing the song to stay with the words. My recommendation is this one. Well done, Round Ball Newbie.
Yeah, I am fully aware of this. Seeing as I am also a newer member, I wouldn't expect everyone to want to sing this chant, or any chant I wrote. I just couldn't resist the offer to create something, and play with words. I had been thinking of creating a chant for some time.
