    From today's KC Star:

Wizards are still waiting for injured Simutenkov

Igor didn't get in on Wednesday as they were expecting... having visa problems.

    Here's the scary part:

I hope the Club put in a clause with his new contract stateing something to the effect of passing a physical. I personally don't want another pricey striker's salary counting a full season against our cap when they play less than a 3rd of the time. Achilles injury could take a very long time to recover from.

Preki's out for a good chunk of the season.
Wolff will either be out injured or with the national team for a good chunk of the season.
Simutenkov is possibly more seriously injured than Preki.
Klein, Zavagnin, and Garcia look likely to miss games due to US callups.

Meola is looking like our only "name" player that we'll be able to count on this season. This does not bode well at all.

I've not got a good feeling about any of this. I know we only have to beat one team to make the playoffs, but I'm beginning to wonder just which team that's going to be.

How many months are we talking about? 2-4 months or is it more like 4-6 months?

  6. Injuries /Cuts

As a transplanted Wizard fan stuck in Chicago, I cannot get enough info outside of this board. With the injuries mounting quickly, has there been any talk about signing someone new or at least taking a look while the team is in Portugal?
Also, it looked as if Taylor was less than stellar in FLA. Was he hurt?
Have there been any more cuts? If not who does it look like will get the axe, especially considering our lack of scoring threats all of a sudden.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

According to the article: "the Wizards were planning on evaluating at least one player during their two-week trip next month to Portugal."

So you see, all is not lost.

I am not trolling because I do not have any dislike for KC, but this does not sound like a very promising season. The injuries are really racking up. Hopefully the Russian Doc is a quack.

Well, when we finish last, it'll just be interesting to see how MLS HQ conspires to make us give up our #1 draft pick so that DC United can draft Jamie Watson and keep him near his studies in Chapel Hill.

Well I don't consider that trolling, cause you are really correct here, things are not looking incredibly bright at the moment. And "evaluating at least one player" thing? I'll wait until I see something concrete on us bringing in another player.

I got a better one than that...

Haven't there been a couple occasions where teams were given an extra "discovery/allocation/whatever" player when a high profile player was injured? (Mathis and Wolff come to mind...)

If Igor and Preki are down what are the chances MLS helps KC out? I say nil...

If one or both of them are out for the entire season, then the league would probably allow an extra roster spot.

We won't finish last. Even with Preki out for 3 months. We're used to playing without Igor and Wolff, so that's not a huge difference. We're still better than Dallas, and probably Colorado, and maybe LA.

Besides, we have an enormous amount of depth. And Gansler is the most creative, and probably underrated, coach in the league. We'll be okay. Gutierrez may end up playing forward, but we'll make the playoffs. And go at least as far as we did last year. Write it down.

    1. You can put a player on IR. They still count on the cap but not on the roster. Once placed on IR, they're gone for the entire season (playoffs too).

    2. MLS used to have a marque player replacement rule. You could designate 3 players (maybe more) as "marque" and if they went down the league would get you a replacement. That rule was done away with either a year ago or 2 years ago.

    3. FWIW, it appears like everyone in the league is either capped out or has committed what money remains. DCU just waived Milton Reyes to get under the cap. He was offered around the league but (to paraphrase DCU's technical director Dave Kasper) "no-one in the league could fit him under their cap.

    4. Cap compliance day is March 1st. I wish you luck on the injury front. DCU is having the same problems on the frontline with injuries. Losing Preki is a punch in the gut. As for the achilles--if it goes you're talking more than a couple of months.
