How's this for free association? I was watching a foreign film on an HBO channel (I am American) tonight, which takes place in Amal, Sweden (rings over the A's). I then decided, for some odd reason, because I liked the scenery, to look up the town website, and see if they had a football club. Turns out they do, and it's called IFK Amal, but I couldn't exactly find a website to the club. Anybody happen to know the link? Seems to me it's a very small, lower division club, but hey, I like Atvidaberg, too, so who cares. So, if anybody knows anything about IFK Amal, please post. Skal.
The movie you did see was probably Lukas Moodyson's "************ing Åmål" (maybe it has a more neutral title in the US..). The movie does not take place in Åmål, it has been made in Trollhättan mostly in an moviemaking complex called "Trollywood" but the outdoor scenes has been shot in the surroundings of Trollhättan. Since Trollhättan doesn't fit the description of a small countryside town, which the town in the movie was supposed to be, they used "Åmål" in the title instead. Anyway, Åmål is a small city with app. 12.000 inhabitants in the western parts of Sweden not far from the Norwegian border. There are actually two football clubs in Åmål, IFK as you have mentioned and IF Viken. They did both play in Division 5 Dalsland (level 6) last season. IFK Åmål won the league and will play in division 4 (level 5) next year, Viken finished second,18 points behind IFK. The league table can be found here http://www.svenskfotboll.se/Table.asp?TournamentId=3987 IFK Åmål's official website is here http://www.ifkamal.nu/ IF Viken's official website is here http://www.ifviken.com/ None of the sites are in English though.
Dune, you are right about the movie I was watching. And CS, here in the United States of Americanizing Things That Are Foreign, we call the movie "Show Me Love", which I guess is the name of the song played during the infamous kissing scene----but that's a whole different thread. And it was subtitled, which required me to be pretty attentive, but it was better than dubbing in that I could listen to the beautiful language. Dune, thanks for the links!
I have it on video, i think i'll watch it tonight... its been a LONG time since i've seen it (på bio!)
Thanks, I always wondered if it was THAT Åmål I drive by so often. They have a nice football pitch visible close to the highway.
