why not change the team name while we are at it....I think we could do better than Metrostars

    we can start off fresh....

AND get NY/NJ (the kiss of death) out of our name.

Be kind to the wee lad, he is still suffering from Walshitis. A most horrible affliction.

I think that as odd as 'Metrostars' may have been and still be, it is the name of this team, for better or for worse. All our songs have something to do with 'Metro'. I know they haven't exactly branded the hell out of this team in the area over the past 7 years, but it's too late to make changes in something as superficial as this now.

Not like I count or have a vote...but MetroStars really isn't THAT BAD of a name...NYNJ was terrible but that was gone along time ago...This franchise will turn around everything once they get a stadium in place...thats what i think the problem is...

They could always change the name to New Jersey Metrostars...but just being the MetroStars works for me...

Empire Soccer club.....what was wrong with that??? Oh wait, Nike decided they could top that.

Hey, at least our uniforms colors didn't end up looking like Tampa Bay their first year!!!!!

PSUDude, I don't know if you knww or not, but i'll guess you probably did, but this is what i have from the past...before the 96 season i was part of this e-letter thing and before any of the players, team nicknames, coaches etc were announced this gave the latest rumors and ended up being right on almost everything, but they originally thought it would be the New York Empire SC...but then they thought NY/NJ Empire SC...and that was actually almost final but out of nowhere Nike came in and wanted to go with Metros, then they changed and officially went with MetroStars...

Mistake IMHO...but oh well, its grown on me over time, Empire would have been alot better i think...

I knew that already, but DYK that Nike was about to pull out if they didn't get creative control of the teams the outfitted. Hence the acid and shroom-inspired names and colors.....
see, we can talk with out childish name-calling...mr. poopy-pants!! :)

Hah...Now that you understand my motives...

I had heard that Nike wanted alot of choices or they would pull out, didn't know those exact details...

    Thanks...

PSUDude, your in luck, i remember quite alot of the proposed names, saved a few on my computer (as you can tell with my constant interests in badges and kits, I like expansion issues and team names as well)...

    Heres the List:
    (Rumored Team Names)

    San Jose - Clash, Scorpions

Dallas - Fury, Express (interesting Burn wasn't a choice?)

Kansas City - Outlaws, Express, Bandits, Wizards

Washington DC - United, Force, Spies, Justice

NY/NJ - Metros, Metro-Stars, Force, Firestorm, Empire SC

The other 5 teams has the rumored names correct with what they came to be...

There was quite a lot more before that, that was the narrowed list and unfortunataly the only ones i saved...I remember Orlando was a choice also, and also, I remember initially there could have been a Seattle team but stadium issues were a big problem...

Horrible enough, but you can't forget MetroFlash, one of the suggested names for your club, not to mention New England Nitro, with neon green as their primary color.

As bad as it was, it could have been worse.

I like having the single, unadorned moniker of MetroStars. Kind of like Juventis. Turin is not mentioned in the name, and it's Juve for short, just like Metro is the nickname for our team.

For better or worse we have some history with the team and the name. I like the star badge, but I think a six-pointed star is more distinctive because it is less used -- also more provocative in other parts of the world. I kinda like that.

If I remember correctly, MetroStars was one of three names that the marketing gits were pushing for the Empire Soccer Club in the pre-1996 days. One other was MetroFlash (no joke) and I forget the other. While I was not crazy about the name MetroStars, I am shocked that this team did not end up being named the MetroFlash given their sorry history of PR f-ups.

    Up the MetroFlash!

Man, you always blame PR...it's marketing's fault.

    It hurts, ya know?

so speaking of PR, is the njsea gonna advertise for us now? even though they got a mere packed stadium for the AS roma/ Real Madrid game i dont think they will get a packed stadium for a metrostars game. Bring in a huge international player not one that didn't think of a carreer in soccer and the mls offered him to.
