Too bad size doesn’t play a bigger role on our team. Just look at this. 3 forwards are 6 feet or taller Santino Quaranta, 6-1 185 lbs Thiago Martins, 6-0 185 lbs Josh Gros, 6-0 165 lbs Our midfield is still kind of short, with only one player over 6 feet Kevin Ara, 6-2 170 lbs But on defense, 4 our of 5 defenders are over 6 feet David Stokes, 6-3 203 lbs Mike Petke, 6-2 199 lbs Ryan Nelsen, 6-1 196 lbs Brandon Prideaux, 6-0 170 lbs And Doug Warren is 6-0 190 lbs Just think, if all else was equal, we could put a pretty tall group of players on the field. --------------Warren------------- --------------(6-0)-------------- -Stokes---Petke---Nelsen---Prideaux- ---(6-3)----(6-2)----(6-1)-----(6-0)— -----------------Ara------------------ --Carroll-----(6-2)-------Stewart--- ---(5-10)-----Convey-------(5-9)---- -----------------(5-9)---------------- -------Martins------Quaranta-------- -------(6-0)-----------(6-1)---------- That leaves only 3 players under 6 feet. Unfortunately, the “all else” is not equal and we will no doubt be playing with a rather “vertically” disadvantaged starting 11. I guess we can be thankful that size does not matter.
It's amazing to me that we still haven't scored off a corner since I don't know when. Maybe one of these guys will help us break out of that godawful stat.
I know we scored a few in non-league play last year but I think it has seriously been two years since we scored on a corner. I stopped keeping track anybody know when we last scored on a corner?
Ivanov scored off a corner in the Open Cup (I think it was against the Metro "Ohh we have silverware now" Scum). That's the only one I remember hearing about in a few years. Damn I miss the days when Etch didn't even need a target in the box -dave
Last year I e-mailed the stat guy from the MLSNet column (Peter something) and asked him if he knew that same thing. He said they don't keep records regarding goals from corner kicks. It will take someone with an unbelievable memory to answer that question.
I think Eddie Pope had the last CK goal. Lovely day it was way back in November '96 too Seriously, I think Eddie scored our last Ck in August 2002. It was the gamewinner in a 4-2 win over SJ in RFK. Of course, it still galls me that Ali Curtis scored a CK goal last year in RFK that the cursed referees disallowed because apparently Ali's skull apparently fouled the elbow of the crude defender giving him the old forearm shiver.
You might be right Mike. Everytime I think of us scoring on a corner I think about Marco finding Goose at the top of the box and the Gooseman rifling a screamer on net. Sweet, sweet goal.
Probably just balacing out all the weeallocations we used in the past! And don't post strange words again!! It took me like 5 minutes of my life that I'll never get back doping out what in the hell you were trying to say!
Sorry if I made your head hurt Mike. By the way, I've always referred to the allocations of guys like Quintanilla or Nunez (when we were speculating) as "smallocations"
Wouldn't it be ironic, in the context of this discussion, if Cerritos becomes the guy to break the streak?
We were counting down the number of corners without a goal in my section last year. I think 149 is last number we counted.
Just to correct an assumption --- while size helps in headed CKs, timing and hops are equally important. But the key is the delivery, this year some one other than MAE will take the corners and I think that will matter. Both Convey and Earnie have done so for the MNT and have been effective.
I'm pretty sure it was Ivanov in the Open Cup semifinal against the Scum. I believe it was the opening goal, or something to that effect. Damn radio webcasts.
According to stats at MLSNet we had 175 corners last year. Also MARCO10 is correct that Eddie scored off a corner against San Jose. I did not read the remaining game summaries on MLS site but it seems reasonable that our last goal from a corner kick was that game in 2002.
I can confirm that our last goal off a corner kick in a league game was August 31, 2002 v. San Jose. Etch takes it, Pope heads it in. I did some corner kick stats analysis a while back in another thread. I'll dig that up at some point and update it for the beginning of the year.
I remember that thread and was hoping you would reappear isaac101. Thanks for any info you can give us. No matter how you cut it, it is a depressing stat.
I don't care who takes the corner, just as long as I don't see another high sow moon ball that defenders have ages to react to. A nice driven ball would be good to see every now and then.
So if we score off corners, that's a good thing, right? I figure if we can start poking a few in now and again we'll be at the top of the East! I mean look at where we were last year, and according to a previous post we were 0-for-175. It's all good.
