So Zambrano, not unexpectedly, gets the ax after the Scum's disasterous crash and burn. Just to pass the off season, if the new administration in New Jersey/New York (or where ever they are from) decide to start with a clean slate, and they decide to see what they can get for Clint Mathis, a) should the Fire go for him and b) who should they offer in trade? I mean, you could potentially have Ante and Wolff up front, with Clint withdrawn. Nowak running the show in the middle. DMB on the left. Whitfield on the right. Armas in front of CJ, Curtin, and Carlos.
I think we should go after Mathis if he comes available. However, I don't think Wolff will be on our team next year if the trade is made.
bradley v mathis let's all pray for mathis if this trade happens, bob might kill him... but if mathis doesn't go to europe this offseason, i think bob would be the best thing to happen to mathis that said, i don't see this move happening... we already look to be losing ante or wolff due to being high priced... what good is it to lose one of them for mathis who is a top of the cap guy? it would be a rather creative trade to make this happen
Why the heck not pursue him?? The guy is a more complete player than Wolff or Razov for that matter. He could take over Nowaks position. WOW can you imagine Razov Mathis and Da Beas with oen of those guys being replaced in second half by our 12th man Hristo??
I don't see Mathis moving within MLS. The MetroStars cleared Diallo out for a few reasons... 1) He's a headcase. - Less headcases for them to deal with now. 2) Salary room. - So they don't need to move Mathis's salary as much. 3) Three forwards for two spots. - Now it's just Mathis and Diallo, assuming their next coach is smarter than OZ and plays him at forward. I'm guessing he's staying.
I think that Mathis' situation will really be determined by who becomes the new manager of MetroStars. Considering that Metros are now having some cap problems, I would think that Mathis could be a candidate for movement. I don't see him being transfered overseas, as his performance this year in MLS didn't set the world on fire (more because of injury IMHO). I think that he needs to have a great year next year to get a firm offer from Europe. As for Cletus to Fire, well with Hristo out, Mathis could be slotted in his salary spot and we have a kick-ass attack line. With Nowak slotting him passes he would be a great addition. However, I will sooner run a marathon than see Cletus in red.
Except.... with Hristo, we are currently near the max. With player raises and Bob possibly wanted to acquire someone who would make more than Walsh and Vaud...... Therefore, we would have no cap space to acquire another max salary player. We already have Wolff, Razov, and Nowak maxing max salary. That's almost half our salary on three players.
Mathis would be an awesome addition if we can also keep Wolff. Remember USA v. Mexico in Feb 2001? Who came in for Reyna? Mathis. Reyna is the USA's Novak, so if it were at all possible to keep Mathis in MLS, he could maybe be a good replacement for Novak. One thing Mathis clearly needs is an excellent coach, so I think he'd do better here than in NJ. Meanwhile, let's sign Donovan, too, since we need a good right side midfielder. (Landon did that job in the WC a few times.) And while we're at it, let's sign Jones, Pope, McBride and Mastroeni.
I would not be surprised to see Wolf or Mathis with DC United next year. Especially if El Diablo leaves. Only time will tell.
Re: Re: If Mathis is on the trading block, should the Fire pursue him? I doubt it. DC has Rocket Roy Lassiter, what do they need Wolff for? Anyway, now that Zambrano has been fired as coach of the Metrostars Mathis is more likely to stay in New York. (err, wait, they want us to call them the Metrostars, so I guess Clint is staying in Metrostars)
There is absolutely no way in hell we can afford Mathis with our current salary situation. We can't even afford our *own* team, and that's without Hristo. I know Fanaddict was bemoaning our lack of draft picks in 2003, but we should have more than our share in 2004, because trading for draft picks clears cap room. Later, COZ
Was going to say something along these lines, but I don't see this trade happening with Zambrano gone. Then again, Sackofshit is still the GM, so you never know.
So if Hristo retires. And we trade either Ante or Wolff, and maybe one other middle level and a lower level player, we couldn't make the salary cap? Why not a line of of either Wolff/Razov up top next to Dipsy. Midfield of Armas, RunDMB, Cletus and say either dema, Kelly Gray, or Daniv (whoever is left) with CJ, Carlos, and either Curtain or Whitfield. Is that still way over? We could stock the bench with a bunch of a-leaguers. They'd be cheap, we'd find out who was really worth keeping. And besides, it's not like we use our bench anyway..... : - (
He'd make a half decent assistant coach as long as the head coach isn't a potato like whoever it is coaching San Jose.
