Let's say that initially I wasn't his biggest fan in his first season for us, but he demonstrated his qualities in the 2nd half of that season (and beyond). A real magician capable of contributing on both ends of the pitch. Good luck to him on his next adventure, his legs may be gone but I think there's clubs out there willing to make use of that magic.
Disgusting behaviour from the board. Perez and other executives don't know how to respect their own club legends ffs. - Xabi wanted him - The players wanted him - Modric himself wanted to stay - The fans to wanted him to stay. Modric is still a very good impact sub at 40. More importantly, he's an excellent mentor for the younger players.
Let's be honest here, Luka staying might be problematic because he is eyeing the 2026 World Cup. We already know he doesn't like it when he wasn't playing much.
Luka will never be problematic for the club, he's a class act. But he has his sights on the WC 2026 and no one at the club, nor Modric himself, would have thought his tenure at Real Madrid would last until 2025 (!). I think this is a win-win for both club and player: the player will get a massive farewell and will immediately focus on his final objective (the WC26), while the club grants talented players as much playing time as possible. It still hurts, but I'm grateful that both parties are seemingly on great terms and understand each other. Luka is a lovely person, and I'm sure he'll be back with the club in another role post-retirement!
If i'm honest, i kind of feel like this was the main problem. I don't believe Xabi truly wanted that.
Him, Woodgate and that guy who fell asleep on the bench whilst scratching his balls. Then was some wild times for Madrid.
Not really clash, but clearly it's hard to create enough distance when a player from your "time" is playing in a team you're coaching. Xabi will most likely want to speak to a team that doesn't really know him as a player first hand.
Digusting for the club to decide to move on from a 40 year old and give him a proper sending-off? You must be joking. "The fans wanted him to stay" How can you possibly suggest that is worth taking into consideration in roster construction? What a thoughtless thing to say. To me Modric is the goat, but it's absurd to throw the club under the bus for deciding to move on.
Also the tension if Modric has further physical drop off at 40 and Xabi having to reduce his minutes while Modric wants to prepare well for 2026 WC. Could ruin the vibes they had as teammates from 2012-14.

Hey, a semi-vacation year in Miami sounds like a great deal. Though I kind of want him to get that oil money contract before he rides off into the sunset.

Completely agree, but goes to show how hard Zidane had it coming in mid season as a brand new coach and winning the UCL.
But he’s Zidane. If you see any interviews of players talking about what it was like to be around him they turn to school boys (except R9 of course) He has that aura undeniably
Yeah, Zidane was feared even while he played. I remember Pablo Garcia saying Roberto Carlos played pranks on every single player but they made sure to tell Pablo Garcia to leave Zidane alone after he pulled a prank to Beckham about his wife. He said it's unfortunate because he had a great sense of humor, but still, Zidane was a man of peace.
Zidane squad is a lot better than the current one. He only has to fix one broken puzzle James Rodriguez following 1-nil loss at home to Atletico Madrid, that changed the trajectory of the team. He literally had 3 no 10 (Benzema/Kroos/Modric) on the team which made his job a lot easier. Alonso has none for now.
That was the amazing Julian Faubert. God…. Dark times back then. It makes last season feel like a tropical breeze.
Modric in the MLS would be funny to watch. I don’t believe it though. The season doesn’t align properly with the WC unless he’s looking to take a long vacation this winter and rest/train properly for the beginning of the season in Feb.
