Don't think that's Vasquez's fault... nor are the situations fundamentally comparable. Vasquez always got the short end of the stick (unfairly) from the fanbase because he was a back-up player. He was poor but so was the whole team. Modric was, on the balance, the best midfielder this season in spite of coming into the season of rhythm and having to fight his way back onto the squad.
Lucas Vazquez will most likely never have to pay for a meal in Madrid for his entire life. The internet isn't real. Lucas is beloved.
The pass to Cristiano for the goal against Juventus in the CL final is a moment i will never forget. But my favorite moment wasn't some outside the foot pass or some crazy assist, my favorite moment was his tackle on Messi when he ran up from behind him, chased him down and slid and stopped him. Another moment i will never forget is when he fought off 3 PSG players trying to tackle him while running full speed from our half and after passing into their half he unleashes a inch perfect through ball for a crucial goal. Farewell legend. What a pleasure to have watched him play in our shirt and represent us the right way, the way most fans want to be represented, with class and respect for others. This hurts but it had to be done. I only wish his goal wasn't to play in the WC so he could retire here but i am sure the farewell will be properly great for him. He is our legend and we will surely see him back at the club because he's Madridista to the core now. I'll be wearing my Modric 10 this weekend to honor the great man. Real Madrid is the best football club in the world in my eyes and for most players it's an honor to put on a shirt, with Luka it was an honor to have him wear our shirt and fall in love with the club. We were the lucky ones. Best player at his position and even better person.
As somebody who's a Croat and from Bosnia and Herzegovina, just like Modrić, made me absolutely proud and privileged to have him represent my favorite club for so long.
I’m still trying to process this... He became my favourite player very quickly, a maestro, a magician, a genius on the field. Even when MARCA’s poll called him the “worst signing of the season” in 2012. Thirteen seasons, 28 trophies, 6 Champions Leagues, 4 Ligas and a Ballon d’Or. Feels like it all flew by. From “flop” to forever legend. Gracias, Lukita. Thanks for every bit of joy.
I remember I was in Madrid at the stadium during the 2014 CL final watching the game on a screen. We’re down 1-0 to Atletico in the 93rd minute and I am desolate. The guy next to me was from Miami. He turned to me and said “Don’t worry dude, we didn’t travel all this way to Madrid to see our team lose…” and then Modric goes to take a corner kick… In the resulting bedlam someone stole my then girlfriend’s phone but we didn’t care. La Decima was here after a 12 year wait. Cibeles was calling and that night is one of my most cherished memories. Thank you for everything Luka, by far my favourite player to watch. The world of football won’t be the same without you. Our most decorated player ever.
Luka Modric did everything he could to convince Real Madrid to let him stay: He offered to lower his salary, He accepted a bench role, He let the club take their time and make a decision when they want. The club, in the end, decided not to offer him a new deal. He waited until the end for Madrid. https://as.com/futbol/el-plan-renove-sacrifica-a-modric-n/
Damn, thank you legend! Glad he gets a proper send off, he’s one of those players I’ll yap on about when I’m an old man. Time to grab his shirt, was a pleasure watching you at your craft sir… if you love the game you love Luka!
We love Luka but the club 100% made the right call. Nothing lasts forever. Now the only thing left is to honor him and let him feel the love of Madridistas.
He is one of the greatest players I’ve ever seen. I have been banging on about this for a while, but for me, in a 433, my all time greatest midfielders are Maradona as 10 and Modric as 8, in front of a defensive midfielder who I can’t decide on. The guy had absolutely everything. Unselfish, great work ethic defensively and offensively, great temperament, all the technical skills, all the mental skills. At his peak, you give him the ball in any situation and he would make the right play every time. Just a great, great player.
13 years of absolute greatness. 🤍 pic.twitter.com/T5OudXEVaE— Madrid Zone (@theMadridZone) May 22, 2025
Yea I agree. I was hoping he'd make the decision for himself though as its always sad when a legend is basically told to leave by not being given a contract.
Parece que fue ayer cuando debutaba aquel joven súper tímido proveniente del Tottenham, todo lo demás fue historia. pic.twitter.com/HN1Gph5bRy— Trunks (@trunksRM) May 22, 2025
One of the most complete midfielders of our generation; gave us over a decade of delight with goals, assists, dribbles and tackles. He was immense and absolute gem in midfield, but best of all he was a complete gentleman off of it. Well will never forget you; forever legend! PS: I really hope he becomes an ambassador or coach for the team; I think he can totally contribute to the team off of it.
That would mean he would be given a token contract offer. No thanks. I would rather the team give him a serious offer and Modric walks away knowing he could still play. Thank you to one of the greatest midfielders of all time!
Maybe took it for granted a little because it felt like he was always going to be here. But hits hard to see Modric leave, will hit harder on the weekend. The greatest midfielder in club history. All-timer. Will never be replaced. Few in club history chilled their blood like Luka…— Kiyan Sobhani (@KiyanSo) May 22, 2025
