He changed the way the playmaker position is played. He has the skills of a futsal player, runs like a shuttler, and defends like a true tackler. And he is a Nike guy, and Nike did not feature him in those big comericals full of players.

Most of non-Madrid fans don't see it that way though.

Mostly RM haters tbh. Modric at 33 was winning BDR. Iniesta went to Japan at the same age. Being the most successful club that signs superstars of other big clubs won't make RM likeable with other fanbase.

All RM players have to deal with that. Jude is getting hated and belittled since joining RM by the same rival fans who were praising him at Dortmund and were desperately hoping he joins their club in 2023.

Iniesta was very very good but as noted already by more than one person Luka was/is exceptional at everything, including tenacious defending when necessary, not particularly an Iniesta trait, the only drawback Luka had/has is his height, no headed goals happening there but the most complete player i have ever seen.

Not necessarily true. Most casual fans underrate Modric, not just the haters. Iniesta had the benefit of playing with Messi so the sheep just follow.

Modric might have the edge with longevity, but most fans still remember Iniesta scoring the World Cup winning goal. That image tends to sway a lot of opinions.

Most people I speak to about football agree that Modric is the best overall midfielder they’ve seen, including any defensive or attacking mids as an overall package.

Whilst Iniesta does have the WC winning goal, Luka also has his WC performance of dragging Croatia to a WC final, and winning the Ballon D’Or in a prime Cristiano and Messi era, that’s a power play if there was ever one.

Lothar Matthaus gets thrown into the convo from older heads also, although I’ve never seen him play.

Mattaus was also very good both on and off the ball, but Luka is, IMO a technically better player, certainly with the ball at his feet

I hate this but it has to be done I guess. This team that won everything for us and we probably won't see any team reaching that level of success year after year, for me had Modric as the catalyst. We would have won 4 in a row if Modric wasn't injured in 2015 I always say that.

There isn't much to be said about Luka that we don't know already. Such a beloved player and likeable person. I loved watching him in his prime and even in his later years. It feels like he's the last one leaving but we still have Dani for now.

13 years at this club is an incredible run, but it's time to move on.

Luka Modric at his peak was pound for pound the greatest midfielder of all time. You could slot this guy anywhere on the pitch and he would excel, insane footballing IQ. Newer generations won't understand just how great this guy was in his prime.

Its not breaking news, its heartbreaking news. It feels like yesterday watching him in his prime float like a butterfly and sting like a bee in that Champions League dominating midfield. Time is just so so merciless.

Even though I knew that day would come, I am still not ready. The greatest midfielder I've ever seen at this club and one of my favourite players ever. Such a class, flair, technique, vision, calmness under pressure, etc. etc. He truly is an example for every player, young and old. Thank you for the memories, Luka. We will never forget you!

The corner kick of La Decima, the trivela assist against Chelsea, the goal at Old Trafford. These will be etched in my memory forever.

Thank you for the memories Luka! I never imagined this kind of impact when we signed him, even being a fan of him. Absolutely legend who should go down as one of the greatest to ever grace the Bernabeu pitch!

Peak Modric was such an outrageously complete player. The creativity of a 10, the work rate of an 8, the technique of a maestro paired with the willingness to track back and defend like a 6.
