The Confederation Cup is the only thing happening on the other side of the world in the coming month, so it will certainly be watched by a lot of people involved in football....Taking into consideration that European are in offseason and many clubs will try to strengthen their ranks, it would in no way be surprising to see a club try to get some MLS players who shine in the Confederation Cup...I'd like to know what you would think if your MLS club's favorite American players (those who can be part of the USMNT) do well in the tournament and have a chance to go to European teams after next month's Confed. cup (that is ,right away -as it appears will be the case with Tim Howard-)....Who would you let go? (or refuse to under any circumstance) and whether that is based on your love for club, country, MLS itself, or the player's future
Why wouldn't ya let 'em go? If given a chance and they want to let them test the waters. Good experience and let them prove that American soccer players are for real.
If an MLS player does great at Confed Cup, would you let them go abroad? well, they don't really need our permission, do they? but if they each gave me like $5,000 or so, I might let 'em go.
Anyone who thinks American soccer players aren't for real has blinders on. Again, if the price is right, yes.
I don't think it's too likely anyone will move based solely on Confed Cup performance. We know clubs are looking at Beasley already. We know Bocanegra and Mathis are planning to go when their contracts are up. Looks like Howard is gone. McBride wants to stay. Some of the roster will be filled by Euro guys like Lewis. There aren't too many left who I think are capable of playing well enough to impress a European team enough that they could persuade MLS to sell in midseason. Think about - we went to the quarterfinals of the World Cup and there was no clamor to buy US players. I expect no player will be sold out of MLS as a result of Confed Cup performance.
Well, I would sell Bocanegra and Mathis if I could so that I could get a return on their "investment".
yes, for every good player that we send off to Europe to improve their skills we can give a younger player time to develop in the MLS and perhaps become a star someday because of that chance that they wouldn't have had.
If a player wants to go to Europe and a club in Europe wants them and will pay the right price to get him, then he should go.
